Very Sad 2.1 Pinto

My engine has broken!! I was putting the finishing touches to my Canary yellow 2b this morning, getting it ready for a good run out tomorrow to the show. took it for some petrol and when I got back, nasty rattles from the engine, particularly under load. it was supposedly rebuilt by a specialist 1000 miles ago, But a couple of years ago) What do I do now? do I get it rebuilt again? to be quite honest I would be happy with a standard 2.0 engine, although I am a petrol head, I dont need the loudest/fastest etc. This one has been rebored to 2.1 and has a piper cam. would I be better off with a 2.0 zetec? It would be nice to find someone who could do the engine swap for me, quite happy to pay, but not astronomical prices. will I get any change out of a £1000 for someone supplying and fitting a new/recon engine? they can keep the old bits, might be some value in them somewhere? :80:

oh bugger! I only got the car in January, paid £5000 for it, thought I was getting a good one! Reckon I will just have to stay with Pinto then, anyone know where I can get a good one from?

before you panic and bail find out whats wrong.

ive seen rocker posts come loose..and they can rattle like hell...and is a simple spanner fix

does it have oil..and pressure..is the spark plugs ok and not broken off..

so many things to check before panic stations.

I would have to pay someone to do that, I could do a straight engine swap but stripping them and diagnostics is not one of my strengths. if anyone is willing to come and have a look and give me a quote for a repair I would be happy with that.

Your mere minutes away..if you can wait for a few weeks I can pop over and take a look. Until then, are you confident to tackle a few simple checks?

As for a swap to zetec. It's not hard but the price won't be cheap.for a start exhaust and intakes are on opposite sides. So you would need a different exhaust manifold, Even looking around flee bay and others it would appear things have gone up in price.

I'd set aside 2k easy. You may get change but its about on the money.

2k spent on a pinto tho will give you a completely striped down, acid dipped block, and full rebuild with new rings, bearings all round, ported head with cam. I'd say full works. I certainly wouldn't charge any more.

But end of day it still wouldnt have the same power or torque of a midly modded zetec.

It can be done cheaper, many have and I'm sure I'll be corrected, but Ill say for every cheaper conversion there's more that are more expensive. You get what you pays.

to give you an idea. there was a pinto 2 weeks ago. full set up. modified head, kent cam, bike carbs, management, manifolds etc etc

went for 1200

so a standard head and block should be about 300-400 ish max.

its a days steady work to swap em over.

but id pop the rocker off first. it can show up many things.. even a compression test will help with diagnosis

well it looks like I will stay with the pinto then, either get mine rebuilt or get a supply and fit. I am not too happy with a modified engine like mine supposedly is, I would much prefer a standard engine.

Quite happy to buy a second hand engine as long as it is guaranteed to be a good one, Maybe someone is upgrading to a Zetec and I can buy their old pinto engine?
