Snapped Clutch Cable

maw

Recommended Posts

After passing the MOT on Wednesday I was looking forward to a drive out in the glorious weather today & calling into Newark to catch up with everyone at the Lincolnshire meet... Managed 7 miles before my clutch cable snapped!

Fortunately I managed to get off the main road & call my wife. She towed me home & the car is now in the garage!

I'm a complete newbie & can see how the cable runs but I have no clue how to start to fit a new one! So I'm calling out an SOS for anyone local in Leicestershire who could educate & help me fit the new one in exchange for a bacon butty & as much tea as you can drink! It'll have to be next weekend...

Is there anyone who can help me? :-(

Thanks Tractor... Thursday evening is good for me if that is any good for you? Beer tokens available. I'll PM you my address & phone number. I'll get the cable sorted (& another spare) - I knew these were a weak point but came as somewhat as a surprise!

It would be handy to know how to do stuff like this!

The short Sierra cable loops through the exhaust manifold and gets fried, wrap manifold and use heat cover on cable

I fitted a Cosworth cable as it loops all the way to the front but needed to space at the pedal box as outer is shorter than standard

Thanks Snapperpaul.

It snapped at the pedal box end. The manifold is heat wrapped & the cable also had a heat coating on it too. It looks pretty straight forward to change but I'm unconfident of getting it right so I have a nice clutch biting point. I'll get the cable tomorrow & see how it looks when I venture back into the garage.

I think I have a type 9 gearbox, the donor was a 2wd Sierra Cosworth, I just need to make sure I get the right cable!

Sorry you couldn't make it to the meet, we had a good turnout. Re Clutch cable, here are few pointers. I went through all this with my Superspec last year as they all suffer from regular clutch cable breakages. All described at http://www.rhocar.or...tch cable&st=0

'Steven' pointed me in the right direction with "...What you need is a QH ( QCC 1303 ) cable off a Fiat Ducato 81-86..." He was absolutely right and I got it off E-Bay. There is one going there now for £14.60. Item 261413775660 (Although this is for the standard Superspec with the Rover engine and Ford MT75 gearbox)

I also followed the advice at http://www.rhocar.or...=1 and redesigned the pedal end to avoid the same thing happening again. I describe how I did it on my blog at http://the-superspec...utch-cable.html

Hope that helps you out..

Reminds me of when i snapped my clutch cable 1/2 mile from work on the way home. walked back to work got some pliers, string and anything else i could find and walked back to car.

Once i got the panel off i could see it had snapped the nipple off the end. Luckily there was enough cable that i could tie a knot in it! which then meant i had something i could pull against. Tried some string first and that snapped pretty quick but luckily i'd picked up some of the nylon strapping they put round pallets etc. Managed to tie some round the knot of the cable and then around the pedal.

gave me just enough pull to operate the clutch the few times i needed it to get home the 20 miles. I changed gear a few times without the clutch which can be done if you are gentle and match the engine to gearbox speed whilst gently pushing against the gears. I saved the pedal for the few junctions i knew i'd definitely need the clutch as i didn't know how long it would last.

Got me home :) prob the thought of being at work spurred me on.

once you get used to changing them they are easy. had one snap many years ago and got my dad to bring me a new cable and changed it in about 10mins at the side of the road and continued on to my lectures.

hmmm why do i keep snapping cables...

Could also pop over if you need help, but I think you will find it pretty straightforward. You won't need to go into the footwell though, it's all accessible from the pedal box. Just make sure you use some cable ties to keep the cable away from the exhaust manifold.

Thanks guys... I've been working away so only just picked this up! I went to Euro Car Parts on Monday and they did not have the right cable & the computer said it would have to be a 'special' order & they'd ring me if they could source them. Still no phone call!

So went on eBay on Monday morning at work and in 2-mins I sourced a supplier & so I bought two cables (just in case).

It all looks straight forward but I don't know what position the plate should be or the pedal if you catch my drift! Or how to adjust to get the correct biting point.

If Tractor doesn't make it tomorrow (I understand that people have commitments & cannot always help) then I'll bump the post with a new SOS for the weekend or next week!

This is a great example of why membership of the club is so valuable.

Cheers Tractor! That is great...

I'm at home but talking to a customer in the US until 4pm. I'll arrange for the kettle to be on ready! I really appreciate you coming round to help... Just hope the cable I've got is going to be OK because I do not want to waste your time when you've got your own build on the go.

See you tomorrow. :-)
