Throttle Position Sensor

Hi All, I'm looking for a TPS for a 2.0 litre Pinto EFI and having no luck at all ! The engine will start without it and will run at 3000 rpm but as soon as I let the revs drop to idle it dies. Engine is reluctant to start with it fitted and will not run cleanly if indeed it does start. Any help much appreciated. Cheers !

that's odd because my pinto efi runs fine with it disconnected, just seems to stop the fuel cut off on overrun, so it pops and bangs a fair bit. May also affect timing.

A faulty tps may cut fuel completely if it thinks the throttle is closed, but it will only do this at specific throttle openings, usually fairly small where most time is spent cruising. Best thing to do is to follow the instructions on testing the tps here: http://nw.rhocar.org/inj.htm

I'm wondering if altering the tps just a symptom and you might have a problem with the air flow meter/wiring. How do you mean it runs roughly? does it pop/bang/misfire/sooty exhaust/flames?

You could try RS components part number 319-310, this is supposed to work.

I have to say though I've not fitted one so can't guarantee it works, I was looking like you and happened across a thread on another forum. At £40 I decided it was a bit step to experiment.

They seem to be expensive for what they are. I managed to pick up one of these 2nd hand but unused on ebay http://www.race-technology.com/throttle_position_rotary_3_161.html. However if you are using the standard Sierra setup with the flow sensor, the TPS is probably only used for acceleration enrichment and flood clearing whilst cranking with more than 90% throttle.

Update:

TPS has been tested on an oscilloscope and works fine.

Have refitted it to the engine.

BTW Jez my tame leccy engineer assures me the RS part would be ok as a replacement but as this one is OK will pass for now.

Have checked for air leaks and none appear present.

Am suspecting the idle control valve.

Engine will start and run at 3000 rpm until warm with throttle held. Will idle but fluctuates between 1000 to 2000 rpm. (Imagine saying WOW every 2 seconds)

Any further thoughts anyone ?

Cheers

Yes it sounds like the air idle control valve, they tend to get sticky so overshoot on each move just take it off and use carb cleaner to clean it out. They don't normally breakdown just get dirty and need cleaning from time to time.

my efi 2b revs up/ down like a boy racer some times, a quick blow out with carb cleaner works for a time , also once after topping up with oil i for got to put the cam cover vent /oil filler back on, it run like a pig no tick over had to keep the revs up or it would die
