Zetec R1 Running Issues

Hi all

So 90% done on my re build before spraying....but I need to get it running better.

Running standard 2l blacktop on standard (I believe) r1 carbs, fuel pump from the bike with one filter.

Megajolt jnr as the brain with no map ( or whatever is pre loaded) Inlet manifold angled so floats sit level

Firstly does the above sound ok, worried I should maybe change to bigger carb jets?

First issue - doesn't start easy, one if choke on carbs is opened. If throttle is open opened at all the it stalls instantly (over fuelling?). Plugs are black so again assuming over fuelling.

Any advice on some potential checks/tweaks??

Thanks

Simon

I'll scour the web to try and find one, I have loaded one in the past that was for a similar set up but it made little difference. Plan would be to get it to a rolling road to tune but I'd like to be able to drive it there at least!

The generic map should get it started-my 1.8 zetec is running the old pinto map and still made 145bhp at crank! If you have not used bike carbs before they have a knack to getting started and keeping the engine running.... My zx9r carbs need choke for first start but no throttle, choke released and throttle introduced simultaneously and it purrs 😍 R1carbs may be different....

Very strange having soothed plugs as opening throttle deffo points to far to much air.

If to much fuel was at fault to cause this problem, you would be making lots and lots of black smoke.

The sooted plugs could be from start up, if you can't open the throttles, they would not get a chance to clear.

I'm not knowledgable enough to say what size jets you need, but you need to know for sure. Otherwise, if you open them to wide, they are no good to you.

If you have a decent tuner near to you, they won't mind giving a little free advice to get you going.

HTH, Ken.

do the R1 cards have adjustable throttle needles on the Kawasaki carbs the throttle needles are tapered and adjustable and the needles need to be adjusted downwards and I can send you a map if you want a starting size for the jets is 1.5mm

also have you had the engine running with just the edis pack cos its best to run it like that you will be able to rev it with just the edis once you have it running ok then add the megajolt

If the carbs have not been set up on a rolling rd you may as well take a big piddle in the wind... i put bike carbs on a pinto many yrs ago it wouldn't run at all so trailered it to a dyno "torquetune ollerton" 5hrs later it ran like a production car and stayed like it... it will save you a lot of grief and potential blowing up your engine...

Your not running lean then, for the cost of rr i bet there would be improvements in both your engines. I bet a pint that your afr will be out somewhere in the rev range. My pinto v8 and zetec have all ben improved greatly by rr session's
