Super Spec Track Rod Ends And Other Bits

Hi All,

I am slowly getting my Super Spec back on the road after a long time sat in the garage (7 long years), there are lots of jobs to do including re-wiring the electrics as i have never been happy with them.

I noticed that the rubber on the track rod ends have perished and will need replacing, does anybody know what these are from and where i may get replacements?

Before i put it in the garage all them years ago there was a horrible shaking coming from what I can only assume was the prop shaft at anything above 25mph, has anybody else had issues like this and if so what did you find the problem was?

Also, before I try and start the engine is there anything I should do such as trying to crank by hand or moving the car forward and back in gear to prevent any damage due to the fact its been sitting for so long?

Sorry for all the questions!

Cheers,

Bugsy

http://www.balljoint...-end-boots.html

See the link above saves changing the whole joint.

Track rod ends are I feel sure Sierra, have they got a little triangular lug at the side of the ball end?

Vibration might be a U/J on the prop or loose prop?

Thanks Ian,

Yes they have the little triangle on them, the link looks like a better move than buying the complete unit!

Cheers

Bugsy, I was never totally happy with the original prop on mine - I had a bit of slack in the UJ at the gearbox end and felt it wasn't properly balanced. The UJ's were kept well greased.

With that thing spinning at 1000's of rpm inches from me, I purchased a new one from Bailey Morris with sealed UJ bearings.

The difference with the Bailey Morris prop was instant - the car felt far smoother.

That sounds like a plan Al, I will get the rest sorted then ask them for a quote.

Thanks

Hi Bugsy

Interesting, I have never heard of that symptom from a Superspec before, it definitely isn't a systemic fault. I assume it isn't the standard rattle most of get with the clutch out ? Be interested to hear what you eventually find so I can check mine out :)

And for Al: How did you grease your front UJ on the propshaft ? My local 'helper' drilled an inspection hole in the bottom to do it, but reckoned the angle of the joint meant he couldn't get his grease gun onto the nipple. I have tried from the top without success though it would probably be easy if I removed the gear shift linkage ?

Not sure about the track rod ends but I know the steering rack itself comes off a Ford Escort.

But if you are only talking about these rubbers

Then they are pretty generic. I got my replacements off a jumble stall at Newark :)

Hi Al,

Spot on. I used to remove the tunnel top cover etc and then take the gear shift linkage off.

I did consider drilling a hole from the underside to align with the nipple, but never got round to it, hence maintenance free UJ's!

Cheers

Re starting after lay up , plugs out, disable fuel and spark , crank over to register oil pressure [ light out or gauge showing normal cold pressure ] plugs back in re fix fuel and sparks ,crankit up and start watching for leaks and listening for strange /new noises if all good you have done . Have done this countless times with engine that have been stood for a few months to several years in less than ideal conditions hth mick
