Gearbox Leak

Hi all, have a leak from the speedo cable mount on the side of the gearbox tail. Have an electronic speedo so this speed pick-up point is redundant. Type 9 gearbox ( reverse is left & forwards )

Just lately have a small patch of oil on garage floor, only just enough to make a 2/3" stain on kitchen towel; thought it maybe from gearbox/propshaft seal.

No oil around tail it's a drip from the speedo cable socket.

There is no circlip or part of outer cable present, there was a short metal tube approx. 15mm long x 6mm diam. over a nylon/plastic inner shaft which still rotates when prop-shaft turned.

HOW do I remove plastic tube & seal tis redundant outlet.

If I'm loosing oil when sat in garage how much has gone since the build 26k ago?

Bob there is a tiny oil seal in that housing the small 15mm long 6mm diameter is the original speedo drive.

I would suspect the speedo drive is moving slightly due to not having the cable and circlip to support it and over the years has rubbed the seal.

obviously the baby one of the three, if it is that one then it is engine and box out sadly.

Check your level you will be surprised how little oil you have lost, I have had the main tail shaft oil seal leaking for a year changed it last week and about an egg cup of oil had been lost.

If you get a washer the same dia as the outter cable and weld a tube onto it to cover the speedo drive coming out the g/box and seal the end of the tube. Then clean around the hole in the g/box with a petrol rag fit the new bit and seal with silicon.

I know its a bugger to get at, some cut a hole in the tunnel.

Cheers Ian, that's a life saver as I managed to pull out the metal bit surrounding the black nylon. Made a top hat blind washer to press on face of speedo seal & two spring clips to hold it in place, so plus a little Hylomar & we should be back on the road ---- without taking the engine out thankfully. ( I am so glad I made the tunnel open from front to back by cutting the floor in two)

Thanks for your suggestions , guys.

I think the steel centre you removed locates the nylon gear in posision. This can be removed from the oppisite side of the box by prising out a top hat type of cover. If its too high to get at, it might pay to refit the steel centre with half an inch cut off so you can still use the blank But it means the nylon gear is still in mesh with the steel drive and not lying loose
