Gate Automation Question

I want to put motorised open/close on gate into our driveway to keep our hens from wandering off. I’m happy to do the remote control etc side of things myself, but so far haven’t found a place that will just sell actuators- and wow what a price people charge for this stuff! So, I’m thinking of putting a double acting pneumatic cylinder to move the gate, controlled by an appropriate solenoid valve. Googling doesn’t come up with anyone else doing this, but we use this type of system all over the place in work- but before I start spending, can anyone see any issues with doing it this way? TIA, Brian

What about RS components?

Some geared motors HERE

Massive range there, you're obviously going to have to find one that is strong enough, but it's easy to work out with a ruler and a spring scale

air rams tend to freeze outside in the winter, and the seals go hard

take a look at satelite dish actuators

assuming they are normal hinged gates and not sliding, they will do the job

we have had a firm come in to fix our electric gates at work today..... i wouldnt recomend them!

you will have to get sensors to detect if there is anything in the way such as cars or people. i think there is a regulation for that because a child was killed by sticking his head in the gap. CAME supply all types of automatic gate motors .

Bft sell all individual parts, not cheap systems but the last set i fitted have never broke down yet, also fitted a gsm opener as well so you can open the gates from anywhere in the world if needed or instead of handing fobs out to family you just authorize their phone number to open the gates
