Iva Booked

OK, scary days - IVA booked for June 19th at Yeading in West London.

I chose Yeading just because it is physically closest to me - anyone know if this is a bad place to get tested (I still have time to change it)?

One person on the Locost forum said they were fine but any other opinions welcome.

Always be positive, take some tools and spare bits and bobs. Remember the tester on the day is your best friend, be polite and confirm any failures. I am an ex-TUV inspector (German MOT) and went through the IVA 2-3 times. Failed in emissions and reverse light on the day did not work. Best scenario you pass worst case you get a small list of jobs to be completed.

Hope it goes well.

Hi Neil, well done, all pretty straightforward fixes.

You probably need a brake pressure reducer, that fits in the line going to the rear brakes.

Have a search on-line, Car Builder solutions may do one.

You may find that the handbrake gets better as the pads bed in.

Hi Neil, I have discs all round, and the criteria for IVA is that the front brakes should lock before the rears. When I had my IVA at Southampton, I had fitted a classic mini restricting valve to the rear circuit, (the valve must not be adjustable) but on the rollers this showed too much restriction and was a fail (even though the rears were good enough to pass an MOT). I was advised by Andy, the IVA tester to fit the sierra proportion valve, which is basically a ball bearing in a can that under heavy braking rolls forward and closes off the rear braking port. This device however cannot be tested on rollers, as is only works with forward motion, and was tested by a emergency stop from about 25 MPH. There has been much discussion on this forum as to weather this device works, but I was advised to fit it which resulted in a pass.

I used a Mondeo brake balancing valve on the Cobra. Item number 122525882284 on eBay. Sorry couldn't do a link.

Worked fine on IVA for me.

A bit of a spanner in the works...I phoned up to book a re-test and was offered either this Friday or July 31st!

I just can't wait so long for the re-test so I'm going for Friday. This means no time to wait for deliveries so no pressure reducer or brake balancer. However, as the difference between front and rear was marginal (35 rear, 34 front - I have no idea what those numbers refer to), I only need a small improvement up front to sort that out - I'm hoping a re-bleed will be enough.

A couple of long evenings ahead... :(

I had a similar issue as my front brakes were brand new with zero miles. They needed bedding in, which the garage round the corner from me did on their brake tester for MOT's. Or if you can do similar on a `private' road. Could the kink in the brake line by the master cylinder be reducing the pressure to the fronts?

Thanks guys, the 'kink' he saw was minimal, he was more concerned with the graze on the side of the pipe where the flaring tool marked it. In fact, he was umming and aahing about failing it at all on that - at the end, he actually suggested I just cover it up so the next tester can't see it! Which is what I've done using that Silweld tape stuff :-)

I might try the garage idea for the brakes - what did he actually do? Grind your pads down?

@Richard, thanks for the offer but I don't think I've got time to get them off you...
