Reversing Light Switch

Hi all, Im a new member from Hawaii USA. Just picked up a RH Super 7 and have started doing some upgrade work. First project is a new wiring harness. All pretty straight forward and almost complete but Im struggling to figure out the reverse switch. The car has a Sierra 5 speed and it looks like a switch was just below the shifter. (Its gone now). The question is how do I get to it? The cover over the tranny apears to be welded and the only way to get to it would be to pull the engine/tranny. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance!!

Depending upon the model of car that you have the transmission cover is welded in and forms part of the chassis spine for strength others have plates attached to chassis tubes. Mine's welded and I've been able to get to my switch by removing the shifter and I can just get my hand down to the switch to remove the plug but never tried to remove the switch. You may be able to get a switch in one handed, if not you could cut a hole in the side of the transmission tunnel to get it in.

The screw thread on the switch is about 2.5 cm and can be a pain to remove in situ but with a bent spanner and then small hands it can be done (kids are great). Failing that on one model the owner cut a hole in the gearbox tunnel and then put a plate over it when finished.

Thanks all for the help. Ill remove the shifter and try reaching in there tomorrow. If that does not work Ill go the hole route. Just for fun I attached a shot from my workshop. Its in a agricultural are on the windward side of Oahu. The building across the street is a plant nursery and the mountains about a half mile away are the Koolaus. Their pretty vertical (maybe 2000 high in my area).
