Pinto Engine Setup And Tuning

Hi

I have a RH 2B running a Ford Pinto with twin Webers and have had multiple problems getting the engine and carbs running correctly both when I and local garages have tried.

I'm not really mechanically minded so does anyone know any garages local to High Wycombe that know what they are doing with Pinto & Weber combinations please?

if its running that badly probably need to check a few other things first spark plugs and leads fuel filter timming check compression camshaft position if there is a club member near to you that might be able to help with checking these things

To run well the engine needs to suck in the right mix of petrol and air, compress it, then ignite it at the correct time in the cycle and finally blow out the hot gas produced.

It's all old parts with some wear on them, each probably operating slightly less than ideal. All elements need to be at their best possible efficiency. There could be a specific single fault but it is more likely that it's many small adjustments needed.

Testing the mechanical side of things mean a compression check, cam timing, tappet adjustment at least to make sure compression is OK.

Electrics such as condition of distributor, cap, arm, leads, plugs, coil etc all need to be checked and the spark timed.

Finally the carb needs to be checked, correct jets, acceleration enrichment, float height, choke and all cleaned. Make sure the pump is OK and filter clear.

You should now have correct mixture, strong well timed spark and good compression and that's about as good as you will get it. Don't skip any steps. A timing light and compression tester will be needed/borrowed and perhaps a simple electrical meter.
