Hi looking at buying a 1996 built Robinhood with a 1.6 pinto engine. The owner has owned it since 1996 and on checking the logbook it is correctly owned at his address on the original sierra registration plate and he also has it on his private plate which he last had it on the road in 2008. I asked him about iva sva issues and he owned it before these regulations and sent logbook off in 1996 and it states that it is a Ford Sierra "Sports" in Red/Silver which is correct for colour. He explained to me this was correct for the early cars pre sva/iva and is indeed how dvla returned the log book after he registered it as the kit car made out of sierra parts. It does ring true as it states "sports" and colour correct but i am a bit worried as all the horror stories of ringers etc. It also has been swapped to his private reg and been mot up till he stopped using in 2009. He has showed me paperwork for his private plate and all the logbooks mots and all in his address since 1996 so he seems honest enough. I did ask him why it does not state Robinhood on logbook but like above he said early cars took on the donor cars identity with "sports" or "kit" etc with correct colours. Any help would be appreciated. By the way the name is Rob and hello!!

Can't say for sure about his car, but my Exmo which was built in the 1990s and based on a 1984 Sierra says 'Make Robin Hood Exmo' 'Body type Sports'.

That isn't a lot of help I know except to indicate that even pre SVA/IVA mine at least is booked as a Robin Hood

Cheers for reply. Could be correct as im sure they would not allow him to put on his private plate and now he his going to put it back on the original plate he seems confident its correct and docs back everything up. I have also asked my local mot station and he said that no problem testing it as it all rings true.

this was common pre-sva, but it is not correct. There was a post-sva amnesty for cars registered like this to have the manufacturer updated to the correct information, but that was long ago now. I'd give this car a miss. It's unlucky for the seller that they did not get the DVLA's mistake changed, but to be compliant with the law it technically now needs an IVA.

It's seems like a nice car and at a decent price so I may take a chance and if it comes to requiring iva don't think it would be end of the world. I'll have a look tomorrow and if it's nice may have a go. Thanks for your help people.

I dont believe it should have the original Sierra registration either.

I would expect an age related plate (ie same year as the donor) but a brand new unused number.

I'd agree with Grim.....give it a miss....there are plenty of properly registered cars out there

to be taking a chance with this one.

It was on a A reg I believe which is the same year as the donor but not sure whether its brand new unused number or the donor original plate I just assumed it would be the donor cars original number. I may speak to DVLA tomorrow and clear the matter up. Seems strange that the car has also been mote'd up to 2009 on a private plate with no issues maybe it's slipped the net and I should give it a miss but it's a very good price and could also be worth spending up to £1000 on iva test anyway. It does seem like the owner has missed the amnesty though and not corrected the initial mistake.

As grim says there was a amnesty up to 2004 when the V5 could be amended to the correct the make and/or the discription as prior to this it tended to be a bit hit and miss as to what was put on the V5 after 2004 any car not correctly registered required a sva. I had a kit at the time and had to get the V5 corrected.
