Sierra Lsd Diff

Recommended Posts

Next project to fit LSD diff probably after Stoneleigh to give me a chance to enjoy driving the car for a while. Couple of questions;

1. What diff should I be looking for, type of car it came from and ratio?

2. Will LSD diff work with drums or do I have to update to discs?

3. Are all Sierra discs bolt on driveshafts?

4. Without spending a fortune are there any alternatives?

Engine ST170 and MT75 gearbox if this makes a difference, will LSD make a noticeable difference?

Thank you

Mark,

If you could, get a complete rear end with lsd and disks.

I always thought that drums were push in(tripod), while disks were bolted(lobro). Im sure i saw a post somewhere that contradicted that, but maybe too rare for us to worry about.

I got my rear lsd and disks from 2.0i Sierra.

Lsd are common in either shaft arangements and common ration would be any 3.XX from 3.14 too 3.92

You can get a scopio 4 stud with disks and lobro shafts on a 4.09 lsd. But i think theyre rare and command a bit of dosh, havent seen one myself for sale in years(not actualy been looking)

In my view lsds are worth it, and yes you can feel them working in certain circumstances.

As for costs and other options, id stick to ford. Bmw,mx5 and rwd Vauxhall are other alternatives but the cost of conversion would in my mind be non starter.

If sticking with an original ford viscous LSD, you can get the viscous fluid renewed and diff refurbished for not a lot, I would certainly budget for that.

After market options are many and varied depending on what you want to spend and how you can the diff to perform, most obvious answer for a road car is a Quaife ATB LSD unit, but they are expensive unless you manage to drop on a good deal second hand. There is also another ATB diff on the market now being sold by rally deisgn, I forget the brand now, blackline or some such, and that is significantly cheaper than the quiafe, and early reports I have read suggest it is direct copy of the quaife units.

To answer 1 with another question - why are you upgrading to an LSD? What do you want out of it? What are you using the car for, how do you drive, what sort of journeys are you doing and how do you like the car to handle?

2. LSD will technically not car what the brakes are, but you may find limitations on shafts depending on what solution you go for.

3. No

4. Reference question 1 again, better to understand why you think you need an LSD. I could wade in telling you all sorts of details but let's approach it step by step ;)

I use the quaife ATB in my English axle and can tell you it was one of the best mods I ever fitted, yes it was around £650 fitted but worth ever single penny. Improved the car, better handling and more grip.

If only it was that cheap for the Sierra diff! The lsd unit alone is over £700, so by the time its fitted you are talking best part of a grand!

The english axle is easy providing you have the tools to torque up and set the backlash.

Im guessing it would be same for any diff.

At £400 tho id probably want it done by a pro. Cant be more than few hours labour.

With the addition of the 3.54 diff my English set up cost more than a grand, but the car now has traction and is correctly geared for the power and torque. No point adding bhp and ft lbs if you can't safely apply it. Obviously just my opinion 😀

Oh I agree, its why I spent almost as much on gearbox and diff mods as I have my engine work. In fact, if I hadnt got such a good deal on the gearbox and diff i would have spent more on those than I did the engine!
