Which Donor Car

If it is a 2B (tube chassis) then it is almost certainly a sierra. Also if it has an age related plate then it should have been a single donor, the zetec will have been a later fit.

Also try guv.uk/check-mot-history it gives a bit of history - fail, advice

If it WAS a 2b DOHC originally, your fibreglass panels would have been purple. If you have a different colour body now, check inside serfaces inside the wings or nose cone. These should show signs of the original colour.

If it was not originally a DOHC, sorry but I can't help you finding what the original engine was. If however the chassis number is from the doner car,( highly unlikely but possible) you would be able to trace originality through Fords.

If you are running a zetec, I would have thought a zetec engine manual and a Sierra manual of the doner age would suffice.

If on date related plate, I think the reg number should be the same age as the doner car. Can't swear to that though.

Hi Chris

I'm looking at possibly buying a 2b tube chassis and will be looking at finding a sierra donor what year should I be looking for all I no is they recommend an early one as the anti roll bar is of smaller diameter than a later model which is to heavy. Do I'm confused in what yr to look for

Regards

Ideally any 2 litre sohc manual Sierra, so pre1992 ish. 1600is OK but a bit underpowered.

If it's going in a 2B you don't need the anti roll bar so that's not important and the other minor differences in the parts you actually need can all be accommodated.

In theory, the better nick the car is in means a better chance of selling other bits that you don't need.

A complete Sierra with V5 might not be cheap do weigh this up carefully against unfinished projects that already come with donor parts.

Just to add that a Sierra is probably worth more in parts than as a complete car which is why they're getting hard to find at a reasonable price.

If I dont get a donor car am I right in saying it will need to be registered when finished.

Looking at donor cars they average 2 to 3 grand. I was expecting 5 to 700 ha

Yes, if you build from separate parts and don't go the single donor route you'll end up with a Q plate.

There's much debate on whether this affects the value of the finished car as some people are put off by them.
