I've bought an unfinished kit from a friend. He has put an old 1300cc sierra engine in with twin carbs. My brother has just taken his stg 3 2000cc pinto with twin carbs out of his 3a to replace with a Cossie engine. :D I'm going to put the pinto lump in mine. Once in place, gearbox connected, mounts re-positioned and tightened and the other million and one things that need to be done, is there much chopping about with the loom? (electrics not my strong point!! :( )

i.e. if i can help it i dont really want to replace the entire loom, and if i can, and with a little assistance, just replace the part of the loom that needs replacing! If this is the case heaven knows where to start!!

the 1300cc lump is out of a 'd' reg, soooo, am assuming cross flow??! Does the x-flow exhaust manifold come out of the passenger side and the pinto drivers side?? or does that not make a difference? Mine comes out passenger side. As for the 2000cc i dont think it's efi. To be honest i cant remember a lot about my brothers engine (spec wise) but if you asked if it has this or that i may be able to narrow down whether it has electronic ignition!! I know when you put the ignition on you can hear his fuel pump kick in!?!?

All Sierras were fitted with Pinto engines in 1.3; 1.6; 1.8 & 2.0 litre. this went on until 1989 when the CVH and DOHC engines were introduced.

If the 1.3 engine you have has it's exhaust on the passengers side then it is not a Pinto and would not have come out of a Sierra - more likely an Escort or similar.

Aw bugger!! That could now mean i'll have probs getting an age related plate when sva'd?? :boohoo: , although when the DVLA came down for the pre-sva check, he came back with a new chassis number and confirmed it will be on a 'd' when registered. I'm confused now!! Dont i have to prove the engine age at the sva test?? The previous owner showed the DVLA guy pics of the sierra the parts came from and that seemed enough to justify for the age ralated plate!!

OK, so worst case, engine is not Pinto, but 2.0l pinto going in, may or may not be electronic fuel ign, will much of the loom have to be butchered??! (boo!) :boohoo:

is the engine running as it is? if so I'd be inclined to build it as it is and change it over after the SVA?

I take it the exhaust hole has already been cut?

Yeah, my plan was to keep the 1300, have sva'd and then change after. The exhaust hole has been cut, but was going to fit a vent over the hole (demon tweeks vent) that funnels to a tube and direct the tube the the twin carbs. But am now worried about the SVA and proving engine age as may not have come from a sierra!! and also the wiring issue!

The engine number does have two letters that indicate the year and month of manufacture.

On Ford vehicles the last seven characters of the VIN are the original engine number.

The kit is the 2b sliding pillar. I have an engine number that starts 'WC' but cannot remember the remaining numbers until i get home. Have no record of the VIN number from the original sierra as the previous owner never kept it!! Doh! Is there a central place/site i can go, quote the engine number and hey presto??!

Proof of engine age is irrelevant to the SVA for registration purposes but has some bearing on the standard for the emissions testing.

It's the DVLA bloke that wants to see it as he's the one interested in your number plate. The DVLA site explains the rules for getting an age-related plate; in essence, you just have to prove the origin of the main parts of the car. Like with the donor's V5 (logbook), for example.

1979!! Blimey!! What would it need to start with for 1986/87?? I'm pretty sure it started 'WC' but now starting to question if i've remembered it right!! Do you mind if i PM th enumber to you tomorrow? I have a letter from the DVLA advising that it will go on a 'D'. He checked the car and seemed happy with the pictures showing the donor used and stages in the build. Have a feelin this engine change is gonna be a little more involved than I thought!! and more of a challenge!

1986 would start with G -they are not in alphabetical order Jan is GL ; Feb is GY

1987 starts with H - Jan is HC ,Feb is HK.

If you PM the number I should be able to decode it - the numbers don't help unless you have access to the Ford Information
