Suggest you get the 90 degree adaptor from Speedy cables and you can have a cable made at the same time of the length needed.

I tried in vain to get the ford cable into the MT75 box without a sharp radius and its this that makes them break.

Speedy solution is quick well not that to fit, its a fiddle but there is enough room cost a little more but the speedo cable can then come up ditrctly under the scuttle soft radius so should have no real problem.

My first cable only lasted about 160 miles, second one has lasted about 800 miles so far.

Ford Sierra cable fits, I think the escort one fits as well, (and probably fiesta), go for which ever is the cheapest, make sure there's no tight bends anywhere as Tony says. If you run the cable across the drivers side floor (through the inspection hole) this gets rid of the sharp bend at the gearbox end of things.

But the speedy cables adapto is probably better (Tony, what length of cable did you go for? I suspect that now I've said the speedo cables alroght, its going to break soon!)

Cheers,

Chris

I fitted a 90 degree gear box, it has lasted 4K miles. Had to make a repair as we *.*KK.** the thing on engine removal and replacement.

At first we could not get the "C" clip to fit dur to the shape of the front flange not being flat!

Would fit another but @ £70 it did seem expensive!

Length of Cable from Speedy is dependant on the route you choose.

Can't remember exactly what I ordered and the bit of paper from Speedy is no where to be seen...

I took the route from the 90 degree adapt as a long loop beside the gear box you can do that when the the cable is coming out 90 degree from the original.

Then up under the the inlet manifold again a long loop and then back through the firewall just below the the brake pipes between Resovoir and masters cylinder..

As a point of interest to fit the adapter easily you should circlip it on without the small gear shaft inserted from the other side of the MT75 box. This is a technique FORD always used it means that the circlip will with a bit of fiddlying lie 100 % flat. Then inserting the shaft i.e the small gear from the other side is simply a matter of gentle pressure to engage the adapter inner plus the gear box drive gear and then fit the retainer.

Oh forgot you will need to fit the oil seal this is done by getting someone to hold the small drive shaft in position from the other side fit the oil seal and then gentle pull back the drive shaft ensuring the oil seal remains in its seating.. The whole process only took about 30 Minutes when I fitted mine.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had my first cable break after 100 miles, having inheritted the problem form the original builder. On inspecting the cable run, I was not surprised that the cable had died as it was bent a very tight 90 degrees on leaving the gearbox. I resolved this on my Exmo by cutting a 100mm square hatch in the side of the transmission tunnel (and eventually covering hole with a 125mm square patch held on with self-tappers, with a slot on one side to accommodate cable).

The cable was original Sierra type, which to make the run sweeter, and use up the spare length, I looped it on the floor through 270 degrees before it disappeared under the dash to the speedo. The carper covers most of it. This mod has now done 4000 miles+.

Cheers

Mike
