Gearbox Spacer

I asume the spacer goes between the bell housing and the gearbox? In which case clutch mechanism is left OK, but if you are retrofitting - Gear stick 32mm further back, new rear gearbox mount position and shortened prop shaft required. Or am I missing something

No Timbo you are correct, well mostly, my propshaft, i think has enough to be OK, the gearbox mount for me on a series 3 is just a matter of cutting back the floor and drilling a couple of holes and yes the gear lever hole may need modding.

No big deal if you want to do it

The spacer has arrived.... bought from the Locost site it is unused with Gasket and longer bolts, suplied originaly by a well known 7 maker, well machined and all edges chamfered.

Will look at making this available for closer examination in the New Year.

It will be in my growing pile of upgrades for a while as engine and gearbox are in at the moment.

As an alternative to the V6 Type 9 route, these guys seem to have the parts needed to change the ratio of first gear for £135.

Not sure how difficult it is to rebuild a gearbox though. Does such a thing as a manual for one exist? I suppose if you are stripping the box you might as well change the bearings etc. so you won't get much change out of £300.

i think the old (green) haynes manuals for the sierra have sections on rebuilding gearboxes. Not something i'd attempt without an experianced friend!

What i fancy is a type 9, with a high 1st (like v6), and a 0.75 5th (like diesel t9).

Just bought a V6 box from a guy on the Locostbuilders site and there is another on ebay starting at £50, the spacer was a steal but costs about £80 to £90 from Caterham. The gear kit is just a standard gear kit and shafts from a V6 box, they all say it is easy to mod for the 2.0L pinto but you have to machine the input shaft to match the standard box and as for modifying your own box, have you seen how many little springs and clips are in one of those things?

Now this gearbox upgrade that i am working on will have to be instaled post SVA as the engine and standard box are in, but if i can get the Fiesta desiel con rods machined....... Can you see how ill i am, will there be no end to this madness

The madness continues........

V6 gearbox has spacer installed, newly aquired RS2000 ally bell housing bolted on. It looks all nice and shiney.

Backplate is being modified as the starter moter positions are slightly different.

Thick metal cover for unused left hand starter position being made (by me) for clutch cable to slot into as on original bell housing there is a lug.

V6 clutch actuation lever to long.

Standard clutch actuation lever to wide.

So down to Fords for an Escort RS2000 clutch lever and they had 3 in stock, 6 quid cheaper than Burtons and no delivery.

Decided to change the oil for new and bl**dy hell you should have seen the horrible green sludge that came out, i think it had been in the scrap yard for a while. I am hoping that it is alright with just a flush out and new oil but will keep an eye out for a spare, that will make 4 gearboxes, 2 standard and 2 V6 in the spares pile.

I declined my bosses kind offer of working today and spent a pleasent day in the sunshine working on refitting the engine and box again after failing misserably over the weekend.

I bolted both together outside of the car and spent hours shoehorning it in.

I had the options of gearbox instaled 30mm further back or engine 30mm forward and chose the gearbox back option.

WRONG.

There is only about 15mm of room to go back before the gearbox hits the narrowing part of the gearbox tunnel.

I tried modding the engine mounts but still do not have enough adjustment, so tommorow i will again decline the bosses offer to do something usefull at work and get on with moving the sleds.

The only issue here will be the exhuast manifold exit hole, i get the feeling that the finished solution wil be a bit of gearbox back and a bit of engine forward.

Lets hope for some good weather tommorow.

I just put my Pinto and Type 9 back in this weekend. I added a speedy cables 90 deg speedo drive to avoid the cable loop under the carpet solution and can now see the problems that people have had in missing the chassis upright in the tunnel. Its well tight. If you are intending using the speedo drive on your gearbox (does the V6 box have one?) you will have more of a problem, and moving the engine forward maybe the only option unless you go for an electronic speedo off the propshaft or similar! Here is how close my drive is:-
