thats what most people did. i shortened mine and re silver soldered the nipple on,

some people did use "U" clamps and pinched up a loop in the cable to shorten it that way with out actually cutting it.

Hi Greenie

As above, but as you are fitting disc brakes, hook end?, the AA (and others) use a replacement clamp on end, just add a bit of solder to make double sure.

think theres a pic on Jims site from when he did it

Where is Jims site? I have to shorten my cable too very soon and was wondering the best way of doing it.

Thanks to you all for your advise, I have now got the new end on the cable and it looks like it has never been altered.

Thanks again

i cut the cable in the middle over laped it on the d shaped bit by the handbrake lever and clamped the over laped bits with u shaped clamps-2 on each side. very handy as you can adjusted the hand brake easly.

When I renewed mine (drum brakes on rear) I measured the new cable off the one off the old one, cut the cable and and used large industrial crimpers (owned by a friend ) and suitable sized collet.

If you don't have a friend with this equipment , but your are within easy reach of a Marina or ships chandlers then they are likely to have them (I believe they use them for making up cables / guy ropes ("sheets" in Matelot terminology I believe) for mast supports.

Took me less than 5 minutes , without need for soldering etc, passed MOT and still OK after a year.
