Clutch Cable

When the TV moc came over for the day of chaos (article in next mag), there was some discussion about the clutch cable which fitted but never worked and we never progressed. I've looked at this a couple of times, and thought it was a quadrant issue (but I have red, the largest?) and tried all sort and still not got the clutch to work.

I've taken the cable out today and popped around to my local motor factors (closed due to staff shortages!) so no joy there :( Anyhow there is an attached picture showing the cable and the amount of free wire on it (27.5 cm from end of plastic to start of nipple). Can anyone confirm if this is the correct cable or not (2lt->5spd type 9).

Or any other ideas as to what may be wrong?

Hi Mat,

With the clutch cable fitted can you feel pressure as soon as you depress the pedal or do you start to feel pressure after its been depressed a little, and did you change the ratchet when you changed the quadrant? I wasn't not too far from you this afternoon giving the hood a spin.

No problem Mat

Providing the self adjuster is working and you think it might be that the inner cable is too long (wrong cable) you could try temporary spacers (washers) between ether the buklhead and the outer cable or between the bell housing and the outer cable. If it works then obviously you need the shorter cable. If not the problem may lie elsewhere.

(but I have red, the largest?)

I bought a red 55mm off ebay but it was a quarter of a circle not the half of the sierra so bought a granada black 55mm one which did the trick, then added a cosworth 2wd cltch cable which goes past the manifold, secured by cable ties to the alternator bracket and back to the clutch.

I still have issues with spacing and currently have about 50mm of packing at the pedal end. Eventually, when i get it working properly, i will weld a tube of the correct length to the pedal box mounting plate.

Once you have got it close to how it should be you may get the adjuster to click several times as it adjusts up the slack, it was this last bit of adjustment that finally got my clutch to engage and disengage as it should, the difference in feel at the pedal was huge.

I still have bite point issues and feel that the thicker ( by 8mm) clutch release bearing QH133, i think, will finally do the job.

As a test bodge you could lay a bit of brake pipe in the quadrant cable guide to give a bit more pull.

No. Don't think so. I'm sure there was an entry on Big Jims site giving the details. Pic of the one I fitted below. The groove is only the width of the cable deep and the tangs to hold the nipple are right on the edge. That one on ebay has the tangs part way down the side.

Just to add to the mix - you could use a cable for one of the earlier Fords (Cortina IV/V, Escort II, Capri [?]) which have adjustment at the gearbox end. The nipple at the pedal end is different and you do have to widen the gap in the plastic ratchet slightly (or change the ratchet) but it allows you to get the biting point where you want it.

Something like this

or cheaper
