Poorly Pinto

Thanks for your advice. Undone the exhaust manifold, and all the belts etc. Undone the head bolts - thats a worrying sound when you release them, I kept thinking they had snapped. Plan to get the head off over the weekend.

Cheers

Standard compression ratio is 9.2 to 1.

The thinner gasket will push it to 9.7 to 1.

1.5 mm off the head will give you 10.2 to 1

1 mm off the head + thinner gasket 10.2 to 1

anymore than this skimmed off the head can cause the electrode in the sparkplug to hit the top of the piston

Compression ratios upto 10.3 are OK for unleaded 95 RON

over 10.3 and upto 10.8 97 RON

Definately the head gasket. There was about a 1 cm break right across cylinders 1 & 2.

Ive cleaned every thing up. Is it a case of stick it back on or are there other things I would be best doing since the head is off.

Make sure you put a steel straight edge across the head face in all directions, to make certain it is dead flat .

Any sign of low / high spots and the head will need milling to ensure all your hard work has been worth it.

Put a warpped head back on and you will be doing all this again during the summer months. :o

whilst it is off have it skimmed then you know it is okay, as ian said if it warped and you take it off again new bolts plus gaskets plus skimming plus time

you know it makes sense
