Just to get back to original digression, isn't W reg pre 1973, so legally allowed the black and silver plates?

W reg is only just older than you Tim ;) . 1980-81 I think, so no where near before 1973. My first car was a 1979 T-Reg Fiesta.

It's the date you register the car and not the number plate. Your wonderful Labour Govern

ment put paid to that when they came to power, to ensure you paid for road tax - grabbing........! If DVLA mess up and resister your car as 1973 you may get Free Road Tax and B\W plates - its happened before!

Date about right Tim but it was Aug 71 or 72 with "J" being black/white (optional reflective) and "K being reflective IIRC (may be wrong again)

If it was "constructed" before 1 Jan 1973 it is allowed to have black and silver plates however.......

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/inf104.pdf

"A new number plate format was introduced on 1 September 2001.

At the same time new regulations took effect governing design, manufacture and display of number plates. The regulations introduce a standard typeface, making it easier

for number plates to be read. The change applies to the plates

of vehicles registered from 1 September 2001 and to all replacement plates issued from that date."

Note "all replacement plates issued from that date"

So if it was built pre 1973 then it can show black and silver plates if it already has them but if you have to get a replacement then it must be to the new standard.

This also covers the different scripts and whatnot. The first link shows the rules pre Sept 2001. So long as a plate complies with those and was on the car before Sept 2001 it's legal. It's only if it has to be replaced that it must be the new typeface, colour, spacing etc. There was no mandatory typeface.
