I would suggest a gas mig with a rating of 130 or 150 amps. Its good for thin or thicker mild steel, stainless and a bit of aluminium at a pinch. Sip Migmate Sealey are excellent, Clarke good. Gasless mig is usefull for thicker mild steel and outdoors but not so easy on thin sheet, Arc the same and a different skill.

I use Argon/CO2 mix in disposable bottles. Good for occasional use. Pub CO2 cylinder is cheapest if you can get one. Hire from BOC, etc cheaper if you do lots of welding.

Try your local Adult Education (Down boy!) courses for basics of welding.

Do'nt even bother with "no-gas" migs,they're useles,produce really grotty,slaggy welds.

I have been using pub gas(co2),for about past 7 years, and never really understood why i could'nt get clean welds,.....until

I had a chance meeting with a mate of mine, who told me to ditch co2 and get

argo shield.

I did this and ....Eureka,within minutes of getting the mig set, bootiful clean

spatter free welds.

I'm using an SIP migmate Turbo 150,by the way.

The costs of the Argoshield from my local BOC depot are.........

12 months rental of cylinder £33.35

Refill/gas supplied Argoshield lite £20.90

New BOC regulator and guage 37.50

Fixed charge £8.95(this is to cover their admin costs?????????)

Total £100.70 +vat

= £118.33.

I hope this makes things clearer

Cheers Ian

I thought argon was for aluminium and CO/2 was for steel, mabe that's why my welds are pants as well, should I change to argon?. What about argon / CO2 mix?

With regards for Christmas, I want one of thoes see-through engins that you can see the innerds as it goes round, it's turned with an electric motor.

Gentlemen,

Argoshield gases are a mixture

They consist of argon; carbon dioxide & oxygen in the following proportions

Light 93 : 5 : 2

Universal 86 : 12 : 2

Heavy 78 : 20 : 2

This information is from a BOC Gases Safety Data Sheet

I did know why they contain 2% oxygen - but the brain cell holding this data has died.

We agree with Ianz we borrowed a bottle of argoshield and as opposed to our usual pub gas bottle and it was excellent, Unfortunately its run out now, I would like to get it filled "but" I can get the beergas one filled at Newark autojumble for £10 ;) And I did manage all those years without Argoshield.

Ianz do they check the Serial numbers of your bottle when you get it changed?

Mmm

All

Pub gas contains Nitrogen which is added to stop people nicking the cylinders and using them for welding...

Terry I thought the whole idea of the gas is to keep Oxygen and Nitrogen out!

Hi Dave,

That's why I was puzzled to see the 2% oxygen in the gas mixture - but this was in the BOC Safety Data Sheet.

I believe it's there to control "pool formation and/or flow" - whatever that means.

There's a link there - but it still doesn't explain why the oxygen is present.

I hav'nt needed to get the bottle refilled yet,so I can't answer that question

all I know is that I do'nt recall the guy at BOC making a note of serial numbers,

I seem to remember ,I just helped myself to a bottle off the rack

As I believe it ,you have to have an account with BOC to get the bottle refilled,

they do'nt handle cash or take credit cards, what happens is anything I purchase

I am then invoiced for,and is taken straight from my bank account via Direct Debit.

Cheers Ian

I use the throw away cylinders from machine mart. Get the double filled ones and they last for ages.

PS always turn the valve on the cylinder off when not in use.
