Hood Fitting

Can anyone help?

I'm just fitting my hood and I need to fit the press studs to the hood itself. The outer part presses through the material and then through the inner part.

Question is what tool do I use to fix the inner and outer pieces together? It looks like I need something to deform the small tube in the middle but I can't think what would do it.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Hi Carl

Yes I got the hood from GBS. I'm sure there's an easy answer I just don't want to mess it up.

If anyone comes back with the ultimate fix you'll be able to read it here. :D

Just found the answer in a previous thread.

Most people use a philips screwdriver and a hamer but there are tools out there to do the job too.

Good luck Carl.

Yes it's a 2B. I've only just fitted the support bars at the moment and haven't measured it yet. There is a bit of adjustment where the support bars bolt to the mounting brackets. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

I really need some warm weather to fit it so the hood is nice and pliable. Failing that I'll just heat up the garage.

When I've measured it I'll let you know.

Daren,

You need a tool called press stud pliers. They are often sold in sets with a punch to make the holes. I bought a kit at Lidl last year but I'm still a long way from using it. I'm only at the scuttle fitting stage :( .

Strangely enough I just found a pic on eBay that looks just like the kit I bought:

Hint: It's cheaper from Lidl - when they have them in :) .

When I bought some more poppers to fit my second surrey they came with a manderel punch.

You can see it in the picture. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=190274288216

One end makes a hole and the other shapes the male part of the popper roll over with one blow of a hammer.

If you need to borrow one pm me your address and will pop it in the post.

Phillips screw driver will do by the way but tends to split the small tube as opposed to allowing it to roll over.

For what it's worth............

I fitted a RH Hood with the supplied poppers, and decided it was crap :)

The poppers can be difficult to 'do up' when the hood is tight, and not very secure when they are on. I have since replaced them all with 'lift-the-dot' fasteners (from Woolies trim and the like), which are a doddle to fasten, and never come undone until you are ready to take the hood off (which is also a doddle to do, incidently)

As an extra bonus they can be fitted really easily with no specialist tools!

if you have the choice use anything but poppers - they are really hard to fix and line up etc.

I did mine with poppers the first time and I am know replacing all of them with turnbuckle type fittings.

Just imagine when you are fitting the hood - it looks strong and all nicely lined up and "popped " - now imagine you are going down a road on a blustery winters day ( 30mph wind - pouring with rain ) you suddenly notice that the 70mph limit has been lifted just for you so you take advantage then pop pop pop and whoosh as the hood dissapears over your head !!

Seriously has any one ever lost one ?

Whats the highest speed achieved with a hood and side screens on?

Thanks for the replies chaps. I've got a tool on order. Only cost a few quid.

I'm more concerned about the size. I have measured mine and from top of windscreen to rear panel is about 68". I'm hoping that with some warmth and plenty of jiggery pokery I'll get it to fit. Away with work 'til Sunday so will keep you posted as to how I get on.

Hi Darren

Have you still got the "Crocodile" bonnet ? if so the trick is to crack open the bonnet while you fit the hood, after your initial fit that is.

Then when hood in place just snap the bonnet shut and you have a nice taught hood.

Really worth while doing the inital fit in a nice warm garage.
