i want to build a zero kit car and it will be my first kit that i have built .

i need some hep on deciding on what kit to buy .

i want the car to be road legal and ok for track days too .

they do a base kit for £1795 + vat and a race kit for the same price

then they have an offer on a base kit plus gaz shocks and fuel tant for £2468 inc vat

or a plus kit for £3250 plus vat .

now what would you recomend for me to get , is it worth paying the extra for the plus kit if it will save some money in the long run .

thanks for any help :D

Whatever option you choose you will inevitably be spending more, the decision really depends on whether you want everything on your garage shelf ready to fit or if your happy searching the internet for bits.

I budgeted about £4.5k so bought the plus kit, I then decided I wanted more power so went for Zetec option so upped my budget to £6.5k, I reckon I've finished at about £8k if I take away all the money Ive spent trying to get it running right - probably £9k in total

So youll always break the budget

Now the thing about building a car is that you enter a steep learning curve and beleive me I've learnt a lot, if I did it all again I would probably buy the base kit with all the major components, ie suspension, prop etc, then (and only through personal choice) I would source other bits slowly, I would create my own loom, carpet and trims, my own style lights and wheels/tyres, some things you'll find difficult to source cheaper than GBS sell for anyway!

I'm not sure how much (if any) I would save overall but this would just be my personal choice if I were do it again (and yes I would jump at the chance to do it again - so if you want to buy mine ready made then just ask!!!)

My 'overspend' came from things like guages (£350), shortened sump (£280), weather gear (£few hundred -cant remember), the SVA and registration (£300ish), Fluids and Oils (£80ish) etc etc

Was it all worth it - damn right !!! if you ever see me driving it I have a permanant grin on my face !

thanks for the reply mate .

i have built 20+ cars in my time from the shell up but ive never build a kit car so i thought i would give it a go lol

i havent got a buget for it as it will cost what it costs .

i did look at the base kit but i thought if i get the plus kit it might save money in the long run for other things on the car .

im going to the show on may the 3rd and i will have a good look there and try and get some more info

cheers paul

Hi Paul,

I bought the base kit with the intention of making/sourcing parts that I would need eg. engine mounts, manifolds and tank etc.

However things haven't turned out quite like I expected and I have bought most of the items I intended to make. (time restraints)

due to the fact that the likes of the fuel tank are specific to the car you would have to either make it, have it made or buy it, and like Tony says GBS are about as cheep as you will find.

I got my prop done for about £15 cheeper from a local specialist but the savings are usually minimal.

My advice would be to buy the kit with all the specific parts eg. tank etc. and then source your own wheels and sundries.

Thats me for what it's worth.

Any problems give me a shout, (not ANY, just about the kit car thing. You know what I mean!!) :D

Regards,

Dean

Base kit for me every time :D

Start hunting down bits and bobs from now.

If you are shrewd you will be amazed at what you can find.

Our seats cost a tenner

Full set of Smiths dials with loom a tenner, not every ones choice but I like the classic style.

Old style Mini heater and full wiper system with wires and a bit of hose £15.00 the pair.

Good old flee bay for your wheels, you will be shocked at how many and some times how cheap they can be.

Ours with tyres £180 for 5. with nearly new tyres.

If you are prepared to take your time and do some hunting things can be found.

Was planning a Zero myself, but ended up with a Westfield starter kit. (it was cheaper :D :D )

I am constantly on the lookout for bits and bobs.

Got a set of standard Westfield supension (done 500 miles) for less than half the price Westfield sell them for, (saving £200)

Steering wheel paid £10 (saved £60and it will do for the IVA)

I am sure not everything will come from Westfield, as I want a car that is different, in my own style. (It'll be chaeper aswell but just as much fun :D :D )

Westfield car YES

but HOOD mentality :D :D
