There are several:

  • different size sumps, although they will both fit, the silvertop is shorter,
  • different water pumps, both in rotation and fit, important for fitting of alternator,
  • alternator usually on ,the other side due to the above,
  • flywheel size

The silvertops can also have their cams changed to the blacktops giving a few more bhp

regards

Ian

The blacktop is the better engine with a little more potential although both are disappointing IMO. Head flows slightly better as standard and has shimmed mechanical cam followers. Silvertop has hydraulic followers. Have to switch them to mechanical if fitting above a 285 profile cam. Cams are different profiles. I believe the heads will swap but why would you?

Nothing is interchangeable in the blocks which are different internally and externally. They use different oil pumps, water pumps, cam belt layout and tensioners, rods and pistons. All flywheels swap OK. Don't know about cranks. The two piece blacktop sump will not go on silvertop due to its taller main bearing caps fouling the cast in windage tray dividers (the dividers could be ground down) but silvertop sump will go on blacktop. Silvertop sump is one piece cast ally and the windage plate is tin, held on the engine by extended 2 & 4 main bearing cap bolts. Silvertop sumps come in different depths with those off an escort being shortest.

I can't see any reason for fitting silvertop except pre 95 engine for easier SVA admissions. The blacktop is the better engine.
