god is it me the question says how old are the dogs it don't say each dog so the answer is 36 lol
, nice try Graham - but I hope Ian doesnt see your answer !

Les - why 2, 2 and 9? I think the only possible permutations are;

2,2 & 9

9,4 & 1

3,3 & 4

1,2 & 18

2,3 & 6

6,6 & 1 (but then there wouldnt be an oldest)

Apologies now for the amount of time you might waste on this

I had 2 brain teasers today at work that I thought were quite good, the first I got ok and the second I still dont know the answer to..

First one;

It is said that Engineers take 2 minutes to solve this - (I think car builders are included in this)

Architects 3 hours,

Doctors 6 hours,

Supervisors/Managers 10 hours, the rest have to ask someone. If you determine what the 6th number is, you'll be able to open the file.

If you can discover it, open the file and reply to this topic with the words you find in it.

Which is the 6th number?

1, 2, 6, 42, 1806, ___???

Find the answer and you will be able to open the attached file using your answer as the password.

answer.doc

Second one - and I have no idea of the answer, I have two possibilites, mathematically there are a few solutions but i have no idea which one is the cortrect one - if anyone can explain i'll be a happier person

Quiz: How old are they??(There are no tricks & all the info you need is here.)

A man is walking down the street and meets his neighbour.

The man says "I can't remember the ages of your 3 dogs."

The neighbour replies "The product of their ages is 36."

The man thinks a bit and says "I still don't know their ages".

The neighbour replies "The sum of their ages is your address."

The man thinks a minute and says "I still don't know their ages"

The neighbour replies, "The oldest is a Labrador".

The man says "Aha.. now I know their ages".

Not sure if this is right but!! The trick is the word product i.e. multiply not add the other info in the clues is just dressing so the answer is 2 x 3 x 6. cheers Ian

There are several product combinations giving the 36 figure...

1,1,36 (sum = 38)

1,2,18 (21)

1,3,12 (16)

1,4,9 (14)

1,6,6 (13)

2,2,9 (13)

2,3,6 (11)

3,3,4 (10)

You need to use the other 2 pieces of info supplied to narrow it down to the correct answer.

The neighbour replies, "The oldest is a Labrador".

trying to narrow it down a bit

does saying "oldest" imply that they all different ages

if two were the same(6) there wouldn't be an oldest

if two were the same(1,2,3) he wouldn't say oldest, would it not be the old/older dog

therefore we can rule out 1,1,36;1,6,6;2,2,9 and 3,3,4

well it seems to make sense to me

cheers

  :vava: :vava: just when I convinced myself to stop thinking about it !!

so that leaves..

1,3,12

1,4,9

&

2,3,6

assuming Labradors dont really 18 years old

I did apologise for this right at the beginning !!

Got the first quickly. For the second I got to the end of my tether and googled it. There are a few similar on the web and they all have one very small bit of extra info which this doesn't have but makes it instantly solveable.

Mathematically I can't see enough info in this to do it, but I do have a habit of being a couple of cans short of a 6 pack (normally as I've drunk them!!!!!!)

:yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

i think i got it

"how old are your 3 dogs" answer is 3 numbers

"the product of their ages is 36"

1x1x36

1x2x18

1x3x12

1x4x9

1x6x6

2x2x9

2x3x6

"the sum of their ages is your address"

1+1+36=38

1+2+18=21

1+3+12=16

1+4+9=14

1+6+6=13

2+2+9=13

2+3+6=11

therefore it has to be either 1,6,6 or2,2,9 (sum 13) if he lived at any other number he'd have the answer at this point

"the oldest is a labrador"

1,6,6 - two oldest

2,2,9 -only one oldest dog

so 2,2,9is your answer :fool:

my previous theory was bunkum

thank god for that

cheers
