Hi Lew

it has to be 17 digits 11 letters and 6 numbers make it personal to your self like your name the car make your date of birth hope this helps.

normally the dvla issue you with a number

some people have made their own up and got away with it

whicever way its supposed to be unique and previously unused.....

i have just been into chelmsford DVLA with my own chassis no.

and was told it did not meat requirements

i knew about no 0 1

but it has to start with an s now and a few other things.

thinks its easier just to let them issue one....

Gavin,

At what point and how do you go about getting DVLA to issue the Chassis No?

Surely it has to be before the IVA etc,.

Interested as I too will be using Chelmsford.

This is another great anomaly with DVLA / VOSA :o here in Lincoln they will allow your own "VIN" number, others will not......................

...............the only thing to do is ask the question....... like SVA/IVA unless you tow the party line you will not get the tax disc.

And without that you ain't got a car.............. B)

ps.

our chassis # is only on a steel plate, not on the chassis????????????????? but we have 2, the second hidden!!!!!!!!!!!!

my car is basically finished... well nearly.

just got to fit the front cycle wings and do some trimming.....

i went into chelmsford dvla and spoke to the examiner who said it was ok to bring it in now.

i rang up today to ask for a chassis no. as i have to stamp in on before inspection....

and swansea told me i have to put it in writing to chelmsford.

wil hopefully get into chelmsford DVLA tomorrow and see what they say..

a few years ago when I had my 2b ready, I was told to take it to the Northhampton dvla for it's build up report , they gave my my chassis No, cos they like to keep them in order,( stamped it on a plate and punched it into the chassis) then I got my insurance on said chassis No. drove it to the SVA 2 weeks later, then a retest 2weeks later, drove my other car to Northampton MAC in hand for reg No and tax, on to Halfords for plates , took it for my first run and broke down,

happy days

easiest way is to request a chassis no from dvla

that way there is no probs it has to be stamped and inspected into a non removable part of the kit ,

ie the chassis , a secondary plate is not aceptable .

I made mine up and it has loads of 'zero's' and 'one's' in it, Brighton DVLA didnt have a problem at all - maybe mine's very unique !

Use Paul Jepson and he can advise
