Over Run

One usual cause is a fast tickover, make sure that the revs are set at about 800-850 RPM.

Other can be badly set timming, back to basics realy check every thing.

What set up are you running, carb, injection, --------- electronic ignition, points ?????????

If you are unable to cure it easily, don't allow the engine to "run on" as you put it, it WILL cause damage.

Pop it into 1st gear and with foot on brake stall the engine untill you cure the fault.

same as above but you may also want to check that the fuel cutoff solenoid is working correctly (if you have one). on my webber carb 2v it is at the front. if you unscrew it (but keep the screw threaded part earthed and turn the ignition on and off it should move in and out easily. Might as well check the float level if you have the carb apart. Haynes says run on can be caused by a coked up head but i cured mine just cleaning up the carb and making sure the timing was correct as stated above. HTH
