Superspec Dashboard

Hi All,

While building, I am considering changing the dashboard on my Superspec from the supplied Ford (Escort?) dash pod to individual gauges (ETB style), using a pre-moulded dash panel. I have a few questions though:

1. What is the best (if any) or easiest way to connect the speedo? I have seen a couple methods, ranging from a magnet and sensor to a 'perforated disc' and sensor, the disc fitting between one of the propshaft flanges. Or is this just down to personal choice or is there anything to watch out for?

2. Will the standard supplied GBS fuel level sender work with an ETB fuel gauge?

3. Is there anything to look out for when fitting the pre-moulded dash, (making up spacers for example, to keep the dash flat). The scuttle and original dash are profiled on the Spec.

4. I have seen the dash panels from SVC and am considering one of these. Are these quite straighforward to fit?

Any pointers appreciated. The target to get the car on the road this summer has gone out of the window (again!), so I want to present a completed car for IVA, (including windscreen!).

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Al

I dumped the supplied instrument pod and used etb instruments set into a larger hole, bit like a cobra set up in the centre of the dash

The electronic speedo has magnets bonded onto one of the rear drive shafts with a home made ally bracket to support the sender unit and this seems to work well.

I used the supplied tank sender unit but had to reverse the wire within the unit because the fuel gauge registered the wrong way round. Other than that no problems in 4 years.

I brought one of the dashboards from svc but took it back it was to small for my 2b4 by about 2 inches at the sides so ended up using mdf.

For the speedo i fitted a ford sensor in the speedo cable hole using an adaptor from burton power this worked fine with the etb speedo .

i got a new level sensor from etb to suit guage.

Hope that all helps a bit

Ian

I've got ETB clocks in my Pilgrim - they are good quality and should come with all the senders. I used the ETB wheel (has holes around the circumference) which fits between the prop and the diff. You then just need to make up a bracket to fit the sender. No magnets etc necessary. Has worked well since SVA in 2005.

I don't think the Ford fuel sender will give the correct reading for the ETB gauge but you should check with ETB. Their sender will fit in your tank.

Thanks for the replies all, good pointers as usual. :good:

I've checked the ETB website and will check the resistance of the GBS sender to see whether it matches their level sender requirements.

It's interesting about the SVC dash, as they do two sorts now, one for 'standard' 7 types and one for narrow bodies, I will give Steve a call and confirm dimensions.

If I were to go to either the magnet / phonic wheel route, could I leave the speedo drive blanking 'plug' currently fitted in situ, or would I have to semi-permanently blank this off, or is a sender available for an electronic speedo for the MT 75 gearbox?

Thanks again

Al
