just like the old steam engines, high pressure cylinders fed thier exhaust to low pressure cylinders then onto very low pressure cylinders, know as triple expansion engines, I saw one on a school trip when I lived down in Kent at a water works museum.

...and THEY were replaced by steam turbines. Man! petrol engines are so behind the times!
