What Do You Do?

I've got a really short list compared to most of you guys.

I've worked for Argos and Asda part time whilst I was at college.

Then I worked for Group 4 for nearly 3 months before being transferred to Rentokil Security for a further 6.

In 1997 got what is sort of my current job with a company called CSC. We provide IT for other companies. When I started working for them it was at British Aerospace Dynamics. The customer then became MBUK when Matra came on board and finally MBDA when Alenia was added (when British Aerospace merged with Marconi and became BAe Systems). I've been office administrator, desktop support, floorwalker, server admin, deployment engineer and nowadays I'm a Wintel engineer (I look after the big expensive machines in the server room). Most of that lot has been done from the same desk but since I'm security cleared and prepared to travel I've been sent all over the place and worked on all sorts of customer accounts when they've needed a body (BAe, National Grid, David Lloyd Leisure, Whitbread, Dept Of Health etc.). I didn't have all the experience they wanted for the recent internal job postings for bodies to support Virgin Racing's Formula 1 team :( I could have quite fancied getting paid for wandering around the world for the next 12 months looking after the team computers (I expect it would have been mega hard work but good fun with it).

First job on leaving school was six months as a lifeguard on a beach in Cornwall.

Then fitted in three months as a bus conductor while I was at uni in Manchester.

Then after qualifying as a doctor spent 5 years in the Royal Navy before settling as a GP in Plymouth.

Went mad ten years ago and retired at 53. Best thing I ever did. Still taking the tablets.

35 Years in IT for a handfull of conpanies and still a Technician. Currently responsible for a small but fairly happy bunch.

That's the way I like it though, as up until now it's pretty much kept me out of tiresome office politics.

Just undergone a 'merger' though, so now it's a bit fraught and getting bogged down in 'process'.

Very frustrated at the Company's over-optimistic ambitions on one hand with 'decision paralysis' on the other.

Somedays acheiving/doing chuff all - Often wonder if I'll end up going down Nigel's route.

GBSC no longer supplying 2b now only zero telecon yesterday.

Hmmm, I hope GBS will keep on supporting us who are still building.

As far as jobs go; I spent 25yrs as an Insurance Broker working in Lloyds' of London specialising in motorsport insurance, amongst other things. Also spent 15yrs in the TA (Royal Signals) as a class 1 Driver Electrician (Generators) ending up as MT Sgt.

Now I am an Airport Security Manager.

This is really fascinating - great thread!

I'm a sustainability manager (environmental really) for one of the country's largest cement, aggregates, asphalt, readymixed concrete, road surfacing and mortars companies. Really enjoy it and lots to do at the moment with CO2 reduction and greener construction high on the political agenda and 400 sites to keep on top of!

Sales Executive in IT is my main job and setting up a Cottage Industry supplying high quality custom parts for the Kit Car industry with one of the best Engineers in the business is a little sideline.

So, go and buy those steering clamps!!!

My first job was as a mechanic/electrician and woodwork man on Morris Travelers! Moved into car audio & security where I started doing my core job, training. Did that for several years with a couple of companies and then moved into mobile phone repair training. I have worked for companies working on behalf of Nokia, O2 and now Vodafone. Currently seconded to Sky set top box repair to help set up a brand new repair facility for all of Sky's faulty boxes! Training is my forte but only because I can stand up and talk b***ocks all day and make it sound convincing!

Left school, worked for GEC as a transformer assembler (800 - 33,000 KVA) both oil cooled and the new (at the time) cast resin for 3 years.

Then made redundant

Worked for 7 years for Volkswagen/Audi as a vehicle inspector / general fitting of extras to bring the cars upto UK specs / resolving recall issues (thansfully not many of them!)

Then made redundant again!

Been working for a major Pharmaceutical company based in Kent for the past 15 years, first in production and for the last 8 years in Global Research and Development as a Validation Engineer. This means I get to specify new process equipment and work with the suppliers to finalise the designs. Then we basically test to death before acceptance then we qualify on site in accordance with the plethora of EU, US, UK and company regulations, (don't get me started on CE marking!).

Could soon be redundant due to company restructuring.........
