Left Uni in '75 and started working for a huge muiltinational Pharmaceutical company in the midlands. Worked in lots of jobs in Sales, Sales Management, Marketing Management and finally 32 years later in Business Information. My company then sold my division to a competitor in the south of England so I was offered a good package to retire at 55! Still can't believe I've been so fortunate .

Wow, This is a really interesting thread,

there is a rwal variety of proffesions which has suprised me, Thought there would be alot of mechanics, Although most mechanics dont want anything to do with cars outside work.

I also feel that my job description was very vague compared to what other s have written, so I'll write a whole new list.

Left school with hardly any qualifications as theere was never anything that interested me, I knew I wanted to be a mechanic so couldn't be bothered with anything else. Joined a YTS scheme run by Ford Motor Company teaching skills in industry and construction and while there I took my city and guilds maths and english. Spent 6 months of training and got a placement at a HGV paint shop which i stayed there for 2 years until a placement came up in a Ford maindealer as a panel beater, 5 year apprentiship then moved to an independant garage for prestige cars,

Whilst doing my day job I got into the modification side of cars and built a business from suspension springs to full race engine builds.

6 years ago I made a big decision in my life and moved back to london giving up my business and starting a new career as a service patrol for a contractor to all the major breakdown comapnies.

2 years on and a position within the RAC came up and I went for it, No looking back now, Lol.

Now I'm a self confessed Jack of all trades, Master of none, Lol.

So if we are being honest here it goes.

Left school at 16 started my apprentaship as a coach trimmer with a an executive car company RR after finishing and a few years more on the prodution line. Worked for my step father for approx 10 years as a mechanical engineer back to college, main buisness was engine reconditioning and tuning with the likes of the origanal 2.2 pinto as shown in car and car conversions also heavily involved in single seater racing as my Father was the redex touring car champion in 1969 and 1971. After he went out of buisness I went to work fo BT as a line worker and later went on to become a cisco engineer and aquired a taste for electrical/electronic so back to college to get an HNC took voluntery redundancy and started working for Toshiba medical Systems as a service engineer after a few ups and downs have now been doing this for almost ten years fitting/maintaining and fault finding on Angiography/Cardiology rooms CT scanners as well as general Xray rooms and am very lucky that I get paid for doing a job that i love. Still dabble in coach trimming with the kit i.e surrey roofs and toneu covers etc just for fun. Kev

Kev,

Do you service the CT scanner at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow? I've been unfortunate enough to have been scanned quite a lot there lately.

If you do, then my personal thanks for keeping it going.

Guest The Modfather

It is nice to see that there are other triple 9's workers on here. Are there any from the ambulance sector, coastguard etc? So many people from mechanical and engineering/electrical backgrounds, a few IT peeps, but there is definately a common thread here and that is that 99% are skilled, hands on/problem solving minded folk. Mind you, owning a Hood you have to be! :D

Keep it going, it is interesting.

I used to be a self employed construction cosmetic corrector ( although I changed the title whenever i got bored and since there were only 2 companies doing it I felt i could). Basically this was applying dyes and pigments to mortar joints in mainly new builds where the mortar had dried different colours.

Then went to college and did a C+G in homeless work, so now I work in a homeless and mental health hostel, dealing with alcohol and drug users. Oh what joy!.

Not

Graduated in 1978 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, then:-

Student Apprentice - Phillips Electrical - TV Manufacturer

Development Engineer - Lucas CAV - Diesel Engine Fuel Injection

Application Engineer - Glacier Metal Company - Large Bearing Assemblies

Tech. Support Manager - Geolograph Pioneer - Oilfield Drilling Equipment

Sales Manager - Inflo Bulk Control Systems - Continuous Weighing Systems

Sales Manager - Collins Youldon - Hosereels for Firefighting Vehicles

For the last 9 years Account Manager for Bently Nevada (a GE Company) selling vibration and condition monitoring systems for large rotating plant (Steam

& Gas Turbines, Generators, Pumps and Compressors etc). My customers are mainly Power Stations and Refineries in Southern England and South Wales. Initially my career felt like running across a Lilly Pond - every time I found somewhere to stop, the company folded up underneath me. I soon learnt Sales was where the money was, and gravitated in that direction whilst retaining a strong engineering element. So still managed to become a Chartered Mechanical Engineer along the way.

Started off out of school as a Technical Apprentice at GEC Telecoms in Coventry - way back when we actually uses to make thinks in the UK.

Now a Freelance Automotive design engineer - the proper engineering not the felt pen stuff. I specialise in bumper systems and mostly do exterior trim but will turn my hand to most stuff when required - been doing this for 20 years. Worked for Jaguar, Land Rover, Bentley, Opel, GM, MG Rover, Ford to name a few, now working at SAIC (Shanghai Automotive) at their UK Technical Centre at Longbridge. SAIC are the people who bought the Rover 75 design and built their version in China, and now design their own stuff which is also built in China and are also working with the MG brand and have produced the MG6 which should be seen in Europe soon. Have a good laugh at them now - cos you won't be laughing in 5 years, they really are going places.

Obviously if I had an ounce of moral fibre, I wouldn't be working for the Chinese but as they seem to be the only ones making any progress at the moment in the Automotive field I'm prepared to overlook the fact that some of them aren't very nice and can't be trusted and the government has 'issues', and I'll just keep taking the money!!! Do get the odd trip to China which is handy as it means I can brink back cheap tat that I don't really need.

Long term plan is to finish my place in Wales, move up there full time and just get a job doing something outside that doesn't involve 2 hours commute each day - rag wringer for a one arm window cleaner maybe?

Served my time as a mechanical fitter in the subterranean carbon extraction industry, and move on to working as a shafts man, maintaining the vertical access holes, took my redundancy and went back to college to study C & G in instrumentation.

Worked offshore as an instrument tech, and then as a commissioning engineer seconded to Shell for about 6 years.

Went on the work offshore, off the likes of Burma installing gas platforms for one year.

Came home and set up a plastic fabrication company with my brother in law 11 years ago so now I am :-

Wages clerk

Accounts clerk

financial director

Managing director

HR manager

CNC operator

Welder / fabricator

Sales rep

purchasing manager

Design engineer

CAD operator

Health and safety manager

Delivery driver

Wet nurse to the staff

And all the other jobs that go with running a SME

Think I left mine a bit vague to.

Left school at 16 went on YTS in engineering with a crusher and plant manufacture, moved after 6 months to a company producing knitting macines did C&G in engineering got made redundant. Went to a knitwear manufacturer for 2 years then moved to a machine agent installing knitting machines through out the uk did C&G in knitted textiles. Got made redundant and spent 2 years servicing fire extinguishers and alarms.went back in to the textile trade working for various company's after several more redundancies. finally 8 years ago left what was left or the textile trade and started doing odd jobs and property maintenance which has led in to building. now sitting at this pc because we have no work at the moment.
