i have a 1.8 cvh sierra engine. looking to put on bike carbs and then megajolt.

at the moment it has standard distributor.

i have been offered an edis of a 1.25 fiesta zetec

my questions are

1. are all edis the same? ie will this fit my car

2. what parts do i need. (just to make sure he gives me everthing)

thanks

Bike carbs or bike throttle boddies?

Also I didnt think the 1.25 zetec fiesta ran edis? Edis also runs wasted spark and the cvh had a distributer with cap and arm so you couldnt match the 2 up.

Are you currently running a carb?

sounds like a headache to me, there may be easier options out there.

bike carbs when i work out how to convert prowerly. i have been getting advice but just got to work it out

he sent a pic of edis coil pack on his fiesta so must be. it is off an R plate so maybe introduced after a certain year.

was planning to get rid of distributor and go megajolt.

i know its probably lots of work but if this edis is suitable and free then i thought why not

Steve, you may be confusing edis unit with the coil pack as they are two different items, For distributerless ignition you will have to fit a trigger wheel and pick up onto the front crankshaft pulley and that can be used just to run the ignition, Bike carbs will run on there own as you wont have any injectors to run,

I'm sure you could get distributerles ignition cheaper that megasquirt, Although you can get a megasquirt which doesnt use edis and is much more simple to wire up,

what parts have you got already?

Cheers

Dave

at present all i have is engine.

was planning on using zx6r bike carbs and having a manifold built by a forum member who said would help.

the trigger wheel on my existing engine is the correct size apparently 36-1 and i think friend said he had vr sensor with coil

Wasted spark may cause issues with a carb setup as it may ignite fuel whilst the inlet valve is still open. My personal advice would be to just run the bike carbs and keep the distributor, Invest the money you would use on the megasquirt into a zetec at a later date,

I dont think you will gain much from changing ignition, Also put you energy into the Zero build and worry about mods at a later date,

Hi Steve, Ihave different advice for you, as you are starting from scrach, you have a perferct oppotunity to get the best from the beggining.

If I were you I would start with a 2 litre Zetec or Possibly a 1800 which you can run bike carbs (see Boggs Bros website) you will need the Edis 4 kit, and a megajolt, this allows you to do 3D mapping if you use a TPS on your bike carbs (Latter models came fitted as standard).

The Megajolt can be bought as a kit for $80 from the states but you can buy a fully made up kit from Trigger-Wheels.com for £117, this is linked to the edis system and allows 2 maps to be used 1 Mad 2 Sensible.

If you get a 80,000 mile 2 litre Zetec and bike carbs and Megajolt you wiil get 170 to 180 BHP, this is what Chester Sports Cars do as a plug and play kit for £750, thats bike carbs, Bogg bros manifold, and megajolt, and they have done loads and consistantly get those figures.

You could sell the CVH and use the money to get a Zetec I got one for £100 of Ebay, the 1800 from a Escort requires less work in fitting ie no need to change flywheel, or sump and you will get 150bhp if you fit the 2 litre cams.

If you buy from Chester Sports Cars at £750 you are getting a lot performance that is plug and play with maps, against the cost of Webber Twin Forty's or 45's that are in good nick, and you will save the problem of when you upgrade you carb to Twins, that there is no vacumn point on them.

The CVH is going to cost you more to get more bhp out of it, when you eventually have it running and then get bitten by the bug, of you want it to go faster and make more noise!

There is a site you can see details on http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_articles/h..._ford_zetec.htm

Be carful of emmisions rules and IVA you may need a Engine no older than 1992.

Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but I can speak from my experience of wasting time and money trying to upgrade the engine performance.

Hi Guys,

If it helps, there were 1.8 CVH's with EDIS (I had a single-point injection one, in fact, that's where most of the EDIS hardware on my Pinto came from)

Wasted spark shouldn't cause any problems running on carbs, many sportsbike engines ran like this before injection came along...

Cheers,

Dan

I'm doing a Pinto to Zetec at the moment and agree with MarsBar apart from the emission bit. If your car is age plate registered, it will only have to comply with that years emissions regardless of what engine you put in.

Wasted spark will not ignite the fuel in the chamber that it is not supposed to when using a carb as the inlet valve will be closed and the cylinder on exhaust stroke.

I am running Megajolt on bike carbs with EDIS on a Pinto no problems.

Another incorrect point is the cost, Megajolt is the cheapest way of doing 3 D mapped spark, if you modify your engine the Megajolt setup is cheaper and more controlable than any of the modified distributors.

Later Jolts have the facility for extras such as rev limiters, shift lights, twin maps and more.

The 1.8 CVH carb model comes with an "Edis" type module and trigger wheel on the front crank shaft pulley. It does not run the spark timing as this off the front Cam shaft distributer. Very simple to get going. I ran mine for 2 years. A little lacking in power at the top end, but fun none the less and lighter than a pinto. Might be good for getting through the IVA until you can fit your Zetec etc.

If you get a set of carbs for it I am told this will boost your power considerably over the standard set up. Only problem is your water ways pass through the inlet manifold.

I agree i used my cvh to get through sva test it passed emissions and sound test with no problems , i did 1200 miles last year with it , with no problems at all , I have now changed for 2 litre zetec , you will find you can use the cvh engine mounts they bolt straight on to zetec , i used standard 2.0 flywheel and clutch and have put zx6r carbs with megajolt on , fitting the engine in was very easy just a few mods to ali part of engine and i cut the chassis tube to fit the thermostat , welded and bolted big piece of angle iron to back of tube to keep its strengh. plus if your using everything from a cvh it will be easer to get build up inspection and through reg process . The module on the cvh has a vacumm pipe going to it its called esc and can not be used with megajolt as it still uses a disy cap and has no coil pack like the mondeo ones . hope this helps justin.
