In reply to kens original question,

i used one from a tailgate on a renault 5 and it fits perfectly and raises the bonnet by itself.

I found that all the struts I tried were too strong - felt like I was bending the bonnet everytime I shut it. :o

I eventually used an automatic stay from Europa, works really neatly and wasn't very expensive (less than a tenner).

I used just one, i think it was from another ford, maybe an escort or festa.

Even this was really strong and felt it was bending the bonnet so i made a bracer bar which sits either side down the full length of the bonnet from 1" alloy angle, this keeps the bonnet firm and so far it works a treat!

i use old fashioned muscule power to raise and lower the bonnet and to keep it in the up position i used the sierra bonnet stay after trimming the long end off, as it was too long, but only at one end :D

I don't need a bonnet stay as I don't have a bonnet.... and I can access the engine simply by walking over to the engine stand. problem solved

mmmmmmmm  i think i maybe a little further with my build, or at least got the engine in the car :D i choose the RHSC principal, you only need to lift the bonnet for basic servicing eg oil, water and brakes. any more and its a bonnet off job. "walking over to the engine stand" that emplies space oooooooo a luxuray i certanly dont have in a single garage, but at least i have a garage to work in. i have total respect for people without and still turn out a fine example

I used to used an old broom handle on mine but i kept knocking it, sending the bonnet crashing down on my head!

Once the broom slipped off its mounting and fell down but got jammed, remaining upright, the result was that the broom speared the bonnet as it cam down with it leaving a nice little dent protruding!

This confirmed to me that it was time to make a hydraulic lifter!

The sierra bonnet stay has been nicely converted to keep the boot open instead.

Try and get a tailgate strut from a Citroen AX or BX, they have fibreglass taigates so the struts aren't too strong. You can compress one between your hands. Also doesn't spring the bonnet open too much.
