Anti Roll Bar Modification

I think you can put some hose clips on the steering column to limit the steering movement so the wheels don't rub on the tie bars. It will limit your lock but not by much. Here are some pics, hope they help.

Nice clear pics Andy thanks.

The brackets that you have on the engine bay, are they welded in to the floor as well as bolted?

Hi Darren

I have been following your thread ref rollbar/tiebars as I am thinking of changing my Sub K. (Much too hard a ride in the front). I don't want to usurp the thread but I have got a drawing for a simple tiebar to replace the roll bar. http:/www.rhocar.org/index.php?showtopic=3235. I am thinking of contacting a local specialist metal supplier to get advice about quality of steel and as I have a lathe (But I am not an engineer) plan to try and turn a pair up. No guarantees but if it works out I can try and turn some for you but it might take a while as I have heavy work commitments and also using all freetime helping son with latest home. Guess somewhere about end September (Hopefully). I guess the rod blanks shouldn't cost too much and if I am happy with the 'improvement' I plan to change dampers and springs as well. Let me know if this is any help. Cheers Ian H

Hi Ian.

I spoke to an engineering company today on the phone and explained what I needed doing, and he said that it was easy enough for them to do (hope so, it's not rocket science!), but the only down side is is that the stainless round bar that I found on Ebay is 304 grade, and he states that it is probably the cheapest stainless going, and not the best for machining. Perhaps any engineers on here may agree/disagree or let me know what I should have, as I failed to ask him the question.

Not sure I want to do it in mild steel round bar due to it's job role.

I will search for a better grade and see the price. The 304 is about £16 for 1000mm which will be long enough. By the sound of it, it should be a quick job for them and perhaps a 2 day turnaround, so I'm just waiting for the rose joints and bush kit to arrive, then we'll know exactly what thread I'll need.

Thank you for your kind offer, and I will let you know. I am looking at getting this part done within a week from now as the ARB is now out, and the wheels are holding at a funny angle (will replace bushes anyway).

Thanks again.

I showed my work colleague what I was laughing about and then showed him my signature, and he too told me off for bodging!

Daz,

don't you have criminals to catch, or are things slack at the moment????

Si, things were slack at that time, and I had actually finished my shift, so it was in my time :pardon:

Besides, when I work I manage to get all my stuff done and then help the others to stop me from being bored.

I don't actually catch criminals anymore, I work in a dept that deals with them once they're brought into custody, good cop bad cop, intelligent, constructive and clever interviewing technique is my forte  If that don't work then out come the thumb screws 8P

Darren,

No the brackets aren't welded to the floor. That's just a bit of crap collecting around them. There are 3 bolts through the floor and 2 through the side through the tie bar mount. There is no way its going anywhere and its completely solid with the spacers in.

Hi Andy, thanks for your reply.

What I think I will do is use the original bolt holes where the ARB was mounted thru the floor pan. If I use a flat 5mm plate underneath the floor pan with a 4mm flat bar welded at 90degs so that it wraps up the outside of the car, and a plate on the inside of the floor pan (sandwiching the pan), and then bolt through these plates, and then a flat bar on the inside of the side panel with bolts through to pick up the 90deg plate, and then weld my lugs onto the outside piece to mount the rose joint, I thinks that will be strong enough.

When my car was made, it appears that the engine bay pans are slightly off to one side. The ribs that stick up (2 off each side) on one side they are closer to the side panel, and I cannot get a piece of angle in that area. The other side is fine, plenty of space. But, I don't want one side stronger than other, so by doing it how I have best described above, will give me the same strength on either side.

I'm going to have another look at your pics.

hi

I just took the standard ARB off the sierra and had the end chopped off and added a sleeve added to the side to slide the rose joint through, this allows adjustment and the rose joint bolted up through the body with a plate on top, this stops wheel rub issue

Paul - do you have any pics of the constuction of your tie-bars? Did you buy the tube threaded for the rose joint or did you cut your own thread? I presume you welded the tubes to the cut-down ARB?

hi

the rose joints had a 10 mm thread so i just when to an engineering shop who cut me 2 x 3cm lentgth of steal with diameter to accept the 10mm thread.

The ARB I rough cut the ends off laid and secured to a sheet of ply marked and cut for a matching pair and welded the steel for the rose joints at the side I just bolted the rose joints through, was dead simple and little effort. The engineering bloke even didn't want to charge me as I only took him 10 mins to do, gave him a fiver plus the RJ was the total cost

Could send you photo?

Daz :hi:

You can get the rose joints from McGill Motorsports Click

If you are stuck for turning/milling etc. and can't provide a decent drawing bring the stuff over to Gloucester and I'll try to do while you wait. Might get stuck for a die but that's easy enough to get around.

I'm at home on holiday this week, every day is free up to Friday, when I'm taking my grand daughter out for the day.

Here's a more accurate link Male Rose Joints

Make sure you get right hand threaded ones, left hand taps are expensive to buy. You will also need some half nuts for locking the rose joints, avilable from the same place.

For my wishbones I used the Ultra High strength versions, a little more expensive but worth it.

Hi Alan, thanks mate but I'm sorted now. Someone has kindly machined them for me. I need to get the half nuts, must admitI forgot to order the nuts. I got my joints from McGill's I believe?

I have seen the pics and they look the bizz, I'm well impressed.
