Zetec Alternator

I have searched thru the posts, and there seems to be some variations to reach the same end, that being which is the best alternator for 1.8 silver top zetec?

I see that most peeps say jap ones, swifts, daihatsus, rascals etc, but what pulleys are you all using?

My silver top has no alt or water pump pulleys on it, so first off, are these pulleys multi groove types, or just a single v groove? Are these pulleys interchangeable?

Can someone state exactly what parts you used please? :help: :help: :help:

Thanks guys

As the crank pulley drives all this and it is 5 or 6 multi-V then alternator and waterpump needs to be multi-v also. If your zetec was from an escort the pump should be right. If from a mondeo then you need an escort pump and pulley. Escort pulley should be grooved. (Mondeo one is smooth for back of belt)

My alternator came from a swift. It's only three groove. However its lived on three different types of zetec and been fine. I buy a six groove belt from Halfords and cut it in half making two belts. OK less strong but 15,000 miles and I haven't broken one. Also much cheapness. My local alternator/starter repairer could have supplied a NiponDenso with the right pulley but I'm too tight.

Thanks yet again Nigel!

Do you know what size length of belt you used, Or is just a case of a piece of string around the pulleys?

String round the pulleys. Halfords belts have part numbers made up of their length in mm and a letter for the style, v or multi-v and they are racked in number order so easy peasy to find the right size you need. And as I said you can cut them lengthwise to get three/four/five/six grooves.

Nigel has answered most of it. I just used the alt off my pinto and made up a side bracket on the drivers side of the engine. Ran this with a multi V pulley off the Mondeo Alt and then around the crank and Water pump pulleys.

My waterpump was from a escort off ebay. It'n not exactly the same fixings as the Mondeo but is fine.

Then just got a spare multi V pulley to go on the water pump and connected all 3 together with a new belt.

I'm having trouble locating a water pump pulley, there are none on ebay at all. I also need a crank pulley. May have to ring Fords and see if they stock them.

Thanks

Hi Robin.

Yes I saw this, and it is very bling. Wasn't sure if it would fit as mine is a '92? I need to speak to a scrappy but my shifts this week are pants.

Daz,

You'll have to take a trip up to the breakers (Padworth are so close to you) for pulleys. "Berkshire bearings" in Newbury will do you multi V belt at 10mm steps ( i think, might be 25).

I will ring Fords for the water pump pulley.
