Type To Crossflow

As some of you know my donor vehicle was a sierra import from South Africa. It was fitted with a crossflow engine and 4 speed box. Richard at GBS has suggested that I replace the box with a 5 speed type 9. This will make future engines changes easier and long distance drives more pleasent.

Questions if I go ahead with the change:

1. Will it affect the registration process going for age related plate?

2. Will the bellhousing from the 4 speed fit the 5 speed?

3. What clutch set up would I need (part number etc)?

4. Anything else I need to do or general advice i.e change starter motor?

Thank you. :help:

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

My Sylva Striker had a xflow with type 9

Firstly, the Bellhousing from the Type 9 will bolt straight on to the xflow.

You will need a clutch plate to suit the amount of splines from the type nine and a clutch cover to suit the xflow flywheel (1600 Escort which you should already have of course)

Make sure that the starter has the correct number of teeth and meshes with the flywheel correctly.

You will need to fabricate a thin plate for the bottom part of the type 9 bellhousing as there is a gap where it is a slightly different shape to the xflow.

Thanks Stuart,

Do you think it will be worthwhile or just fit the 4 speed and change both engine and gearbox when upgrade, after all I might not go for Zetec and type 9 I might consider some thing else i.e. motorbike engine.

If it was me I was probably stick with the 4 speed until you know what you want to do. My Exmo has 4 speed but I have a type 9 waiting to go in over the winter as I know I will be sticking with the Pinto in this car.

Think carefully about going the bike route to make sure that it suits the type of driving that you will be doing. My RH (and my Sylva Striker beforehand)wouldn't go near a track so I opted for round-town tractability rather than silly revs but that was my choice for my car, yours might be different.

Type 9 boxes are getting more expensive as time goes on so if you get the chance of grabbing one at a good price it might be worth doing so even if you end up selling it on later.

Hope this is some help

Stuart
