Mating A Zetec Engine To A Type 9 Gearbox

I have got the point in by Zero build, where I need to mate the 2 litre Zetec engine that I got from GBS to a Type 9 gearbox from a Sierra 1.8 CVH (at least I think its a type 9).

I know that I need to get hold of a spiggot bearing. What I don't know is whether or not I can use the flywheel and clutch that came with the engine. Will it fit inside the bell-housing? Can you get a clutch release bearing to operate it? I have read somewhere that I need a different flywheel and clutch. I have read different advice from different sites. One says that you need a Zetec 1.8 flywheel a 1.8 Escort clutch (Ford Finis No: 5028341). Another says that you need to get the Zetec 1.8 flywheel machined to suit the Pinto clutch plate.

I am looking for the cheapest option. It seems a shame to throw away the 2.0 flywheel and clutch. Can anyone help me?

Firstly,,,

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? you have got to this stage and not said hello,, Shamefull, Lol,

As for Zetec to type 9. There are alot of ways to skin a cat, my choice was this.

The Zetec clutch and flywheel you have will fit,(some like alighter flywheel and go for the 1.8Zetec item) Is there already a spigot bearing in the end of the crankshaft? if so, its ok to keep this in place, The clutch release bearing is a pinto item and needs to be brought forward slightly so it sits true on the clutch spring,( I'll explain further down)

If your donor was a 1.8 cvh then I hope you havnt thrown the starter motor as this is the one you need, Also you will need source a lowline sump, (scholar or raceline)

Re positioning the clutch fork so that the bearing sits true,

You will need to remove the bellhousing from the box and extract the locating pin that the far end of the clutch fork sits on, This hole can be tapped and a 8mm bolt can be screwed in, this needs to be adjustable to that the clutch fork can be brought forward approx 15mm, best way is to thrtead a nut and some washers onto the bolt before putting it into the hole you have tapped, this can be used to lock the bolt in place and use the washers to adgust the distance,

Thats the cheapest way.

Where are you located, someon e may be able to come round and have a look, also full membership is highly recommended,

Indeed, I feel somewhat guilty for not talking this forum until now. Sorry.

Thanks very much for the responses. I will probably go for the cheapest option of using the 2 litre Zetec flywheel and clutch. Although it has occurred to me that I still have the 1.8 CVH engine from the Sierra. Presumably I could use the flywheel from that if I got the bolt holes drilled out to a slightly bigger diameter? I need to track down a local engineering workshop for such things.

I am based near Warminster by the way, in case there is anyone else local with good expereince.

Finally, What is the advantage of me becoming a paid member of this forum?

Good afternoon all,

Following on from the above conversation, I to am putting a Type 9, 5 speed behind my black top Zetec and the cable clutch pedal seem to be locked and not moving. It has a Burton steel RWD conversion flywheel with a pinto clutch and release bearing kit. Do I have to move the fork pivot point pin as well ?

No you don't have to move the pivot pin on a type9

I would say your flywheel is putting the clutch in wrong position because a pinto clutch and release bearing should work perfectly

I fitted the zetec 1.8 clutch and flywheel wheel to my kit and worked great till I turboed it

The 2 LTD flywheel can be used but it’s 10.5kg I ran mine like this for a while with the zetec clutch. the 1.8 flywheel is lighter 8.5kg. You only need to move the pivot pin or use the longer thrust bearing if using the zetec  clutch I believe.

I am now running a pinto ap clutch with a lightened flywheel and have put the pivot pin back to original.
