I must be getting really really old.

Just been to the local motor factors and got served by a 21 yr oldish chap. I asked for brake pads for a Ford Sierra

and he had never heard of one :shok:

I noticed on the box they also fit a Skoda Favorit, so i`ll be asking for those next time.

Hhhhhmmmmmmmmm,

I clearly remember the Crosslands oil filter part no. for a pinto is 2121!! All I did 17 years ago was supply bits for Sierra's, Escorts (pads were LP673)and Cavaliers (can't remember the back box part no. to hand) I recently asked for rear drive shafts for said Sierra of the same Motor Factors I worked in over 17 years ago and recieved the same response asking if any were left on the road!! I responded "there are loads, just now in kit cars!!" I still got an odd look!!!!!!!

I still bump into my old manager Mally of Tanvic Spares Grantham, fantastic character and a great boss!!!

Cheers

John

I REALLY hate Halfords.

Last Sunday I was left with no other option than to buy some gear oil from them for my tintop. ON entering the car park I saw a young girl employee, no more than 16, trying to fit a number plate on a new VW Beetle. After I had bought my oil and come out again she had given up and the female car owner was helping her.

A while back I went in for a set of rear brake shoes for a friend's car but was told by the youth behind the counter that 'we dont stock them as there is no call for them', also when I asked where the 'points' were a few years ago and of course the oik had never heard of them

I remember when Halfords mainly sold car spares rather than bikes, camping gear and chavvy bolt on accessories for kids in Saxos and Corsas

That said I managed to get a new bike battery for free by blaming the battery maintainer I brought from there. You are right though I went in last week for some p-clips, thread lock and some nilock bolts. I came out sad.

Hi I use our local Halfords on an infrequent basis but find them adequate and for general service items very competive on prices [tradecard] but would not use them for fasteners or anything like that locate your local engineering supplier and you will get better service and prices, my opinion nodoubt others will disagree .HALFORDS really win in some ways by being open on Sunday when others are closed mower man :)

I had a light go on the way to a party a couple of years ago... Living in Dorset at the time i decided to pop straoght into halfords, rather than risking the lanes, took advantage of the fitting service (to save getting dirty on way to party) and the 12yr old didn't have a clue how to fit some H7's (I think) o the prelude i had at the time. After several minutes of faffing they said they'd have to remove headlamp and to get it off, grill and bumper would have to come off.

I giggled, lifted air box lid up and popped it straight in place! Asked for refund... I was denied as their employee had taken 45mins on my car.

An ex of mine paid £3 to get wipers fitted... I took micky for about 3 months!

Unfortunately, like any other business, they have to trade in whatever they can make a profit in.

Most modern cars now need specialist servicing rather than DIY, so the spares market is drying up.

On the other hand, camping, biking & chavs are definitely on the increase....

The best story I heard about Halford is that an old lady of 80+ bought a light bulb for her car and was asked if she would like them to fit it? However when she was told that it would cost £10 to fit she quite polity told the till clerk to "F*ck Off!". The best part is that two seperate people offered to change her bulb out in the car park! I say good on her!
