2.0l Pinto Starter

you would normally have a thick red cable straight to the battery to the back of the solenoid, a live from the ignition to the back of the solenoid and an earth.

when you put power through the live from the ignition wire it should throw the solenoid and allow power through the big cable from the battery spinning up the starter.

I thought that the starter earthed through the engine but it may have a separate thick earth that you can just put back to the battery or chassis. Just make sure its got a good contact and if it is running through the engine that the engine has a good thick earth strap (which is prob should anyway).

the cable is quite thick, the starter turns over the engine without the wire connected to anything, if i touch it on the live terminal it will turn the engine over without the key, im really stumped, its black with a red stripe down it

thanks

how many poles has the solenoid got?

this looks like a useful thread

http://www.rhocar.org/index.php?showtopic=18316

i tend to search this site using the advanced google search like this

'solenoid site:http://www.rhocar.org/'

as it seems to bring back better results than the search facility on here.

Black wire with red trace is ignition controlled positive to the starter soleniod, starts out black with blue trace at the switch and changes at the starter end, if you have ignition without this connected you've got something wired up wrong
