38 In A 30 Zone

This may be of use to some, it certainly has for me in the past.

I get an email sent every Sunday that tells me where the local mobile cameras will be during the following week.

Up until recently it used to specify what day the camera would be at a given site, now it just informs what week..

Maybe you have something like this in your area.

I got caught doing 76 on M25 a year after i passed, points came off, less than 6 months later i got caught doing 44 in a 30, those points came off in oct. Sunday i drove through a fixed cam that i pass almost everyday, got the dreaded double flash!

Take the points, first 3 don't count on insurance or anything. I know, in 11yrs driving i've had 3points for 10 of them!!!

Daz, you may know this. I thought speed traps were supposed to be used on in accident blackspots? Or is where they just fancy they may get an easy hit? When I commuted to Norwich from Cambridge a few years back I spent ages crawling along single carriageway stretches or worse, waiting at temporary lights during the building of the new dualling section! When the dualling was opened, as I had a company car with petrol paid I rarely "saved the environment" and got caught twice doing 80mph by vans on sliproads that were certainly not in plain view! No excuses, got caught, my fault, took the points and paid the fines (nevey offered a driving awareness course)! As this was anew roads it can't have had an accident safety record, good or bad!

Advise from the wise (for wise, read caught!), the last 3 occasions I got caught (include these 2 in this post) I was unwell! So, if you are not feeling well, watch how you drive, it DOES affect your concentration.

Static cameras do have a set criteria to hit before a placement is allowed. Off the top of my head I'm of the belief that it is 3 deaths and/or 5 serious RTA's. Don't hold me to this though!

As I said earlier, put in the right place they are understandable, put in the wrong place then they are a pain, BUT, if they fit the necessary criteria as mentioned and are placed purely on that criteria, then they are necessary, surely????

As long as an idiot can get behind the wheel then we will have RTA's and deaths will be caused. Cameras were brought in to have 24hr coverage of accident blackspots, now whether or not they continually check that specific site to see if the accident rate remains or lowers or even increases, they should be removed or other types of traffic calming should be implemented.

Thankfully I don't make the rules!

Love them or hate them, they are here for a long time and I can't see them totally being abolished.

Where I used to live near Basildon in Essex, there was a stretch of the A127 near the big Tesco there, where pedestrians would cross the dual carriageway and hop over the barrier. Needless to say, not everyone made it across, but there must have been in excess of 10 detahs before a camera was installed. This stretch can see speeds in excess of 100 mph easily as most of this road is dead straight with few junctions, which can encourage high speed. There is a clear argument for keeping cameras in the right places.

Putting my police hat on, speed limits are exactly that, a limit, not a target or something to be ignored. They are set for a reason. Go over the limit and get caught expect a fine and points. Your car may have the ability to stop on a sixpence, but can YOU stop your car on a sixpence? Can the granny behind you in her S class Merc stop as quick? So many people think that they can control their vehicle in the best possible way, but they are the ones that are ignorant of their own abilities, and often crash or have near experiences. How many times have I been to RTA's (Enforcer can back me up on this) and seen that pure driver error is to blame for a death, be it by speed, stupidity or drink/drug influenced? Think you're a good driver, go do an advanced drivers course with IAM, it will be the best money spent and will open your eyes as to what you AREN'T doing and should be doing. Your driving will change dramatically, you will be a faster driver in the right circumstances but more importanly a better and safer driver overall. It isn't the same course that Enforcer or I have done, however it has been likened to what a standard response officer would be taught in order to drive safely with blues and two's on.

I am a big advocate of safe driving of course, and can drive my landrover 4x4 in a way that some can't even drive flash sports cars when it comes to corners and wiggly country lanes etc, but ONLY when the situation dictates, so it comes down to driver input, experience and knowledge. Unfortunately some think that they can drive like this on every road. Know how to read a road properly and act accordingly to what you read, and you can avoid RTA's.

Next time you are out in your car on on your motorbikes, just keep thinking "I should be able to stop in the distance I can see to be clear on my side of the road!" Expect the unexpected from all angles.

A little while ago, Chris N popped over and I needed to go to the local motor factors. We jumped in my landy, and off we set. I entered the main road and approached a stale green traffic light. I expected it to go red as I approached. To my right and just before the lights is a side road with a car waiting to turn right. The lights turned amber (controls both directions at the same time) so I began to slow. The car waiting to pull out knew that the lights were changing and also pulled out, but he expected me to gun it through the lights and not stop, and just came out of the side road. He hadn't figured into his driving plan that I was going to stop, therefore he was ignorant of my presence although he had seen me. I knew that this was the case as from my peripheral vision I saw him accelerate hard from the side road. If I had stopped where I wanted to (allowing a gap to the stop line) he would have crashed into me. So, I allowed myself a little more road and braked firmer. Chris thought that I was just late braking or hadn't seen the lights, but then he hadn't seen what this other car was doing. I gave myself, and more importantly the other guy, enough room to avoid HIS collision.

Please just take care out there and drive to YOUR ability and not the vehicle's.

A an Irish traffic Garda (policeman) I have to agree. The standard of driving in this country compared to the uk is terrible. I find it such a pleasure to drive or ride my bike in the Uk with one exception northern Ireland.

It is only with the last couple of years that mobile cameras have been introduced here. The Irish mentality is brake every rule until you are forced to obey them. The carrot and stick approach was used to educate people but without the carrot.

It is the same here with drink driving, phones red lights.

We have had a bad plane crash here this morning and we had to put cordon in place and do ambulance escorts and people trying to drive over us. Rant over!!!!!!!

Agreed, but I can also see a good point for "jaywalking" laws being introduced.

Imagine that? Pedestrians with responsibilities.

In my 20 year career as idiot enabler, I have seen many drunks successfully win cases over drivers when they have wandered or fell into the road.

Quite sickening.
