Brake Servo Or Not?

hi there, new here.

i have reciently bought a mk1 sierra s7. it has a 2.0l pinto fitted, i want to fit bike carbs and was wondering if i need to keep servo as i will no longer have vac take off from manifold, or will fitting a smaller diameter master cylinder be ok,

No problem with breaking using the master cylinder you have but fitted direct with servo removed you just have to get used to having a heaver foot but lots say breaking is much better being more controllable with the servo removed. BTW Tiger do a pushrod to convert to non servo just remove and discard the servo fit new pushrod and bolt master cylinder where servo was

I removed the servo when I went bike carbs, and shat myself I quickly put it back. You can use it if you get a vac point on the bike carbs the gbs manifold comes with it.

 

The only way you will get good brakes without servo on the sierra m/c is by altering pedal ratios or changing to a zero (or similar) pedal box and using very good pads as I have done.

It depends on how much gap you have between the pedal box and the bike carbs. On my 3a there wasn't enough room so I went and bought a Ford Ka master cylinder without servo. I had less than an inch to spare between the two. I haven't tried them yet but others have also used the Ka master cylinder along with Mintex m1144 pads, and they report good findings.

Failing that, you could always fit a remote servo from an Escort which works from a bar going across the bulkhead and the servo is situated on the passenger side.

You must be easily impressed Dan; :rolleyes: my wife & I are happy driving our 2B without servo but on a Ka M/C;we are both used to servo assist on our Jeep & found that just a more positive application was required with Ka M/C & still on standard pads/shoes. :blush:

Tim,bought our Ka master cylinder from -- Truck & Trailer Ltd.Neil Maloney on 07814 578000 is the guy;paid £14.95 for it October last year (P & P £2.50) was listed as Ford Ka; new issue & have no reason to doubt him.Looks very similar to Sierra M/C but angle of mounting & rotation of fixing holes slightly different so made up a tapered wedge from 6mm ally. The pipe connections are back to front from the Sierra ones;neede to re-route 2 pipes & extend one so used the opertunity to add a hydrualic brake-light switch in place of the pedal op.which kept falling out of its bracket.

After 2 recent big time lock ups and ensuing smell (burning rubber, not what you were thinking!), I'm keen on doing away with my servo. Car is 2B with standard sierra brakes including servo. I looked at disconnecting servo and buying Mintex pads, but they seem to be 60 odd quid a set :blink: . Looks like using a Ka MC might be cheaper. I understand from other posts about mounting it and the pipe connections, but how do you connect it to the pedal? TIA, Brian

You make up a rod ofsimilar dimensions to the one that it attached to the servo and then use the same connectors to attach it to the pedal. it just sits in the master cylinder

Never used the Master Cylinder on mine. It's still sat on top of the cupboards in the garage.

Often wondered just how much more braking effect you'd get with one on?

I reckon (although I've never actually tried) that I could lock the wheels up if I really stamped on the pedal.

I like mine the way it is - There's plenty of feel and maybe knowing that I'd have to really lean on them helps me drive with a bit more thought.

I cut down the original Sierra shaft but you need to check the clearances due to the shorter length means that the pivot point from where it arcs may cause it to bind in the new MC. Just a case of putting the shaft in a drill press and filing and sanding down.
