Type 9 Gear Box Problem In Low Gears

Hi,

 

I have ben driving my kit car around this week and have had three experiances already I am struggling to get it in to first gear after 10mins of running. The gear is fine when i first turn the car on or do NOT have the ignition on. I have been coping with 2nd gear but last night that was just as bad last night and i had to be towed home.

 

This is why i wanted the kit car to play around with but im a bit unsure what is causing it does any one have any experiance with this? ideas?

For a guess.... The factory fit clutch cable mount on the chassis as bent (its plss flimsy) and your not getting full use of the clutch?

Sticky or cooked clutch cable. Reverse usually a problem too. Worse when hot. A new cable almost always cures this. Bending the brackets is a secondary consequence of the cable getting increased friction.

Worth thinking of insulating cable from heat.

Almost always on pintos, seldom on zetecs gives the clue to the commonest cause. Exhaust heat!

Yes it is possible to have other causes in about 2% of cases! Self adjuster or cable adjustment wrong will give difficulty with gears but usually all of them and hot or cold!

Had the same problem a few years ago...........found that the clutch cable had slightly melted to the exhaust!!

 

New clutch cable (which is an easy fix) and the problem was gone.

I fitted the much longer Cosworth clutch cable this loops past the exhaust manifold

Thanks for the response! I have had a tinker with the adjustment it could be that its been bedding in as iv been driving along. i just wasnt understanding why it got worse the further through a journey. ill have a go with how iv done the clutch tomorrow if thats no good a new cable will be my next purchase!
