Hopefully this in the right section.

 

So I have recently purchased an unfinished EXMO. After having a trip upto the factory in Nottingham I was hooked on building one myself rather than buying a 'fully' finished one. Also being on a student budget does make things a little bit tighter.

 

On to the purchase:

As you can see more than enough to keep me busy for a while, probably best to add that the engine (1.8 ford sierra OHC) currently doesn't run but has been re-bored etc and turns over by hand. Battery, plugs and leads all on order, distributor cap and rotatory arm cleaned up.

 

Currently in the process of stripping the brakes down and a general clean and tidy of the suspension components, I have found one front caliper seized beyond belief and that the front brake lines do not want to part from the calipers so they are packed to go home to dad for some 'gentle' persuasion! On the other hand the rear drums don't appear to have the access screw to slacken them off, any ideas would be appreciated... as they are also stuck fast and have been left to soak overnight before they will be attended to again.

 

Thinking ahead has anyone tried to get the EXMO through the IVA and if so any pointers would be welcomed!

 

I'm sure I will have a few more questions as it progresses.

Looking at the pictures you posted, I'm not sure if there are two fog lights attached to your car. If so, I think the near side one is not allowed any more, although I could be wrong.

Two rear fogs are O.K provided they are identical units & simetrical in placement;just check there is 100mm or more between fog & rear stop/tail. Bob.

There is no problem with the EXMO passing the IVA except the problems of passing an IVA for anyone.

 

Rear fog lights OK as stated but you may have a problem with them not being vertical.

 

Rear brake shoe/ drum stuck, get a bigger hammer or a puller or both.

 

Good building

Rear seat belt mounting on an Exmo/S7/S3 are to low the easy way to correct this is to weld a horizontal tube across the roll bar so the seat belts run over it, the correct height is described in the manual using a block of wood ( you'll need to check this) 150mm long 53mm high on the seat to find a point from which a measurment of 450mm straight up is taken, draw a line back from that point to the seatbelt mount or a strong bar it loops over to find the minimum upper mount height

 

The lower seat belt mounts need steel load spreading plates and captive nuts

 

Steering column support tube needs further support running back from where the column bolts to it, to the rear of the scuttle. Where you bolt this through the scuttle is a good place to run some bar in the engine bay which can also be the start of strengthening the pedal box which has a tendency to flex.

Apart from that the Exmo has few issues for IVA excepting the usual sharp edges.

 

I have always been concerned about side protection so think about something built in to the sides of the tub

So progress over the weekend...

 

Front suspension all cleaned off re-greased and re-painted. Now just waiting for the calipers to be sorted. Currently standing at this:

The "hit it harder" advice worked and the rears have now been cleaned up a bit, bit more attention needed:

Found this "structure" on the rear deck and I'm currently confused as to why its there really...

That's about all for the weekend along with a general clean (excuse the leaves above).

 

Hopefully the battery will turn up soon so we can find out the state of the wiring :unknw:

Not all the news is bad.

Usung a kit car insurer you will pay about half the sum for a normal car. (given driving milage and other terms are the same). I use Adrian Flux and their European recovery service is just £60 extra, Ady just wrote a glowing report about the recovery service. There are other insurers in the mag / on this forum and of course there are good and bad stories about all of them, so make up your own mind. Also you might like build insurance just incase your tools or bits are stolen.

 

You will need nut covers and some padding on the track control arm nuts and the steering arm nuts.

 

Keep up the good work. Glad the bigger hammer worked. We have calibrated them, Pico. micro, Milli, all the way up to the pursauder.

 

Snapper has given good advice on the seat belts and mountings.

Where is the back deck, do you mean the boot floor? At a guess the wood is to increase stiffness and provide an access way for the cables to pass through. Make a double skin?

The wooden structure should in my opinion be made in steel, the diff mounts to the boot floor and requires a load spreading structure or at least a thick load spreading plate to stop the floor twisting

Rear deck I do mean the boot floor. The structure is indeed made out of steel, although the welding is interesting...

The frame on the boot floor is to strengthen the diff mounting my s7 is very similar mowerman

Bit of help needed in regards to the carburetor (dgav 32/36 i believe)... anyone got the same one and a few pictures as to what hoses, throttle linkage etc are needed and where they all go?
