Gear Select Problem

Most likely the gear lever.....it has a rubber grommet that you compress for reverse.

You may need to "adjust!" the black plastic ball which is an interference fr on the lever.

Better still, just replace it with a quick shift.....either DIY or Burton/Rally design etc.

When I lost the gate between 1st and reverse I found that the saddle had worn through and was giving a really sloppy feel.

Replaced the saddle and much improved.

Did the quick shift mod at the same time.

One other thing it could be is the throw on the clutch cable. If you search on here it has been discussed many tiimes. The quadrant on the clutch pedal is often the cause of not being able to select gears, primarily 1st and reverse. You can easily check this by placing a screw driver shaft or something small on the quadrant (between quadrant and cable) to lift the clutch cable out of the quadrant groove and increase the throw. If you can easily select gears then you need to either change the quadrant for a larger one or do as some of have done in the past and fit a plate over the groove of your existing quadrant to increase the cable throw.

If the above quick check makes no difference then do as Ian and co say above and check the saddle on the gear lever....
