Ignition Barrel Removal

Hi all, I'm wanting to fit a new ignition barrel in my new dashboard,

Is it possible to do away with the original Sierra one?

I had the idea that i could just get an angle grinder and cut it off as close as possible to the steering column,

Is this possible to do, and has anyone else done it?

I can't see any reason why I can't,

But I've been wrong before.

Check IVA manual--- think there is still a requirement for a steering lock ( or other means of security) other than just a key switching off the ignition. Is the existing lock U/S ?

For IVA you need 2 forms of security ekectronic and mechanical

This is usualy provided by ignition key as it initiates the steering lock and turns of the power

I'm also fitting a quick release steering wheel, and a concealed immobiliser

No, steering lock works fine.

You can remove the barrel and then you can slide off the lock mechanism. Can't remember if its just a bolt or if you have to drill it out. You could then chop some bits off (only alloy) or just remove the part that locks the column. But i think you would have to put it back on to hold the switch gear.

 

what are you trying to achieve? just a clean look around the column?

ign switch comes of lock with a grub screw, turn key into a position where the round peg in the side of the casting can be pushed in releasing the lock barrel

There is a spring loaded peg in the steering barrel actuated by the lock and key that engages with a castellated ring on the steering wheel

you'll have to remove this mechanism

Yes just want a nice clean look to the column and dashboard,

Got a new barrel and had it wired in and working, just wanted to make sure i could get rid of the old one,
