Pinto 160@the Wheels?

Without quoting figures here is my take

The standard engine which I currently run whilst slowly slowly building the others up is adequate but I find it is just a tad slow with current hot hatches leaving me behind

Another of my engines injection head FR32 was great, a good bit more, revs better and did not feel sluggish low down, it just took off and kept going.

Last engine built to use the most cam I thought I could get away with for the road (RL31) was sluggish low down, noticeable less responsive than the FR32 but after about 3500 tool off like a scalded cat, IMHO it needs forged pistons and more compression to fill the low rev gaps.

It is in the end down to personal taste and driving style.

Well gents,i simply don't care,i picked it up this morning and the first 50 miles were exhillerating, even managed to play with a boxter on the A1!!!

BUT then the fan belt snapped and I eventualy ran out of battery!!

We made one out rope which got me another 20 miles then towed it the last 25/30 miles at a steady 50 miles per hour,my mate oblivious to my screams of slow down you B##++%D !!!

But itshome and ill get a belt tomorrow!!!!

Thanks for all your replies!!!!!

cheers

Other than that its all good!!!!!!!

Mines a standard 2.0 bottom end , race cam ( most aggressive you can get ) , dellorto 40s , vernier pulley and that's 135bhp, to get 160 out of mine I would expect a big bill for internals from a performance engine company

I would mostly disagree with you wargob. True a pinto with 160 would be unusual in a Hood although there were plenty around when it was the engine of choice for lots of ford fans and there were not lots of cosworths available. Easy enough and not very expensive to get 160 at the flywheel. 160 at the wheels would be good and cost more. Either give an exciting engine to drive behind. Very visceral with noise, vibration and a convincing experience of being fast and fun in a Hood.

A zetec with 160 at the flywheel doesn't cost £50. You can cobble it all together for a minimum of a £1000 but most spend closer to £2000 to get a nice install when you factor in ECU, manifolds and fuel injection bits. The downside IMO is that it's too civilised. Whereas the pinto roars like a lion the zetec squeeks like a lamb. Yes, 160 from whatever CEC you have must give the same figures but it's not such an exciting/stimulating drive with the zetec. My ST engine is now very close to 200, still very civilised and getting more exciting but I still miss my old pinto which although it only had 125 at the wheels was more fun to drive. The excitement of the ST comes from near death experiences.

Ok the modern engines are cheap ish from a scrapie but when you ad ex man , clutch /perhaps fly wheel ,inlet manifold, throttle bodies or bike carbs , new mtgs etc to do it properly is a little more expensive than some would have you think!!!, not to mention water rails , sumps ecu 's mower man

Well maybe if you farm out all the work it can get expensive but we fitted a zetec to my friends zero that had a pinto originally and it cost £50 from brakers with everything we soon made a new intake manifold out of 80mm + 30mm tube and chopped up the standard loom then had the original ecu flashed and reprogramed. He did fit a new clutch though for £35. My mate was on super tight budget having not long aquired the zero. All in cost about £450 dont know how much tuning you can do on a pinto for that but im guessing not much....

You say instant 170 bhp, but unless you spend money tuning the engine to your set up, I doubt you would see anything close to that. A home made inlet manifold and a reflashed ecu with map that wasn't specifically written for that engine is not going to make the power that's written on the box. As the pinto is generally a non electronics based engine you can mechanically dial in the power in the cams/ignition advance to suit your set up, the zetec is different. You can get 175 bhp with decent jenveys, and programmable ecu, 160

Bhp with the gbsc manifold. But a home made manifold and a generic map I doubt you would make the power claimed without spending more money. "Farming out" for performance engine parts is normally a good thing to do, as they are made by specialist companies who have researched their product and can back it up. Home made stuff, may work, but unless you really know what you are doing, normally will lower bhp figures, especially when it comes to inlet/ exhaust manifolds.

I can get you 150 bhp for £450 easy with an injection head pinto as a base

Zetec well I am with Longboarder on this as he has done it

Wargob you started by saying you could get 170bhp for £50 then moved up to £450 fair play if it was 170bhp ( at he wheels or not) for £450 fitted inc sump, clutch etc but most Zetec 170's were 163bhp out of the box

I didn't mean to start an argument. Wargob has done it for 450 so I accept that figure. I paid more than that for my exhaust but it is a nice exhaust, 4:2:1, specced by me and custom made. Uprated clutch, light steel flywheel, ARP bolts here and there, sorted fuel pumps, omex ECU, jenveys with long trumpets, uprated injectors, custom cam verniers for VVT delete, matched dowelled ports, a bit of head work and a bit of balancing. Add in the rolling road time and it wasn't £450. Very reliable. I haven't swung a spanner in 2 years since I cooked it when a water pipe broke and had to rebuild the engine. My point was that it does go well but just isn't exciting to drive in the way the pinto was and I'm a bit disappointed. Just too civilised.

Would I swap it out for a 160 bhp pinto? Yes if I could have my money back.

WHAT THE *bleep* your saying that i cant have posibly have made a simple inlet manifold that can compare to the GBS one. I never did much with sump either i just chopped a small amount from the steel section and shortened the oil pickup the exhaust was easy as the guy with the unit next has a mandrel bender then i just welded it up. I also stated that you can buy a zetec for £50 AND YOU CAN. I prefer the zetec over the pinto any time especially on the track. Im not mad for zetecs as none of my cars have one but when ever any one asks me about building cars for road and track day use i alway tell them to start with a zetec.
