Topped up gearbox pit in just over 1 litre so that was issue a lot quieter now

 

Hi, you managed to get a whole litre of oil into your gearbox! I have the same gearbox - with no issues. I've never managed to get to the refill plug to top up, and never applied a concerted effort so I've never checked it. It's in a monocoque chassis too. Your topic has encouraged me to look at this more seriously. So, did you use the filler plug, if so how did you get to it? If not, what cunning method did you use?

Yeah used filler plug and used a syringe to put oil in a big one bought from machine mart screw fix do them too

Squeeze type gear oil, or steering fluid type containers are good for this.

I used the squeeze type gear oil bottle to fill my type 9 on the 3A.

Thanks. I'd never thought of a syringe. I can see the advantage. You can use one upside down if need be.

Next for me is to get to the plug.

Bet you still get covered in it though. I use one of those syringes for my unimog and my landrover. That ep ninety gear oil really stinks and you just can't seem to wash it off

Think ep90 stinks try 320 that we use in machines at work its yuk

Awful stuff.

Absolut must use if recommended. Without ep, bronze or brass bearings will just wear out as if using sand paper.

Don't forget to grease the seal face though or it will burn on 1st use and start leaking again!!

 

Quoted because taking your engine and box out again for a flippin oil seal is a waste of a weekend.

 

Didn't manage to remove mine with just a screwdriver, I used a centre punch to deform the metal frame inwards first, before flicking it out.
