The ally extrusion that takes the sender fits into a rubber hose at each end...hence no earth.

Yeah as bob said the housing is inline with the hoses so theres no earth. I've decided I'm going to drill it and tap it as I'm wary of the diy washer not sealing properly

A short M4 is all that is fitted on mine.

OR if you're not happy drilling & tapping a hole what about a s/steel jubilee clip or similar to clamp a wire to the housing.

I had considered the jubilee clip route but then I'm back to securing the wire to the clip. I think the tapping route is the cleanest and most durable overall. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

With a little fettling the tail of the chip would accept a spade connection, or for real "belt & bracers" use a mains electric earth clip; like the ones produced by "Tenby"

or just solder an earth wire to the body of the sender
