Carpet Fitting Tips

Has any one any words of wisdom for carpet fitting on my marlin? I have precut carpet sections which are all slightly over size, what is the best way of trimming the carpet into the edges and getting a nice straight cut and without the carpet edges ragging up?

Also I was looking for an alternative method for fixing the carpet in place? I glued them down in the last kit, which was fine until I wanted to remove them, I was thinking of gluing the areas that I know won't need to come back off, but for the rest I was considering Velcro strips? Or press studs like you use to fix wet weather gear in place?

I used a thin plywood base cut to fit the area to be covered.

Then I glued the carpet to it. the wood & carpet removes for sponging/washing/vacuuming

& the carpet can be ripped off & replaced if it gets too grotty.

I used a carpet that had a thick plastic backing so no raggy edges with a stanley knife.

I tried everything I could think of with my floor carpets but when I saw Pete Lee's car where he used aluminium treadplates I gave up on carpets and used those. Much nicer, easy to clean and don't get rucked up.

I have a load of big sheets of 3mm ABS plastic which I saved fromnthe bin at work which is pretty good for a backing for carpet etc and is durable and flexible etc..

You'd be welcome to some if you wanted but I suspect you're quite far away

If you use normal straight blades you will get raggy cuts use the hooked type and its a different game ,I used the board method with great results but had the carpet edges bound to stop fraying etc found a local specialist via talking to a friend in the carpet trade  mick

There are lots of very good double sided foam or gel tapes used in the glazing industry that I have often thought would be good for this sort of thing. Stick glazing tape into google, I have never used it for this particular job but have used it for many others.
