Hi guys, I'm a newbie to the whole world of kit cars and bought one off the bay for a reasonable grand, and from a very genuine guy that I felt very comfortable and at ease with, however the car doesn't have a vin plate or I fact a vin number,I have no build certificate or certificate of newness, all I have is the original v5 from the donor car (1985 ford Sierra) and a couple of letters regarding collection of the exmo kit, I've been told by great British sports cars that the current exmo chassis will not pass an I a test due to its method of construction and overall integrity, I'm really not sure where to go from here and could really do with some good knowledge and help to move forward with it, any help would be greatly appreciated :)

GBS are wrong and an exmo can and has passed IVA. I built a similar car, an S7 and passed IVA in November, and if I can get one to pass anyone can with a little care and follow the guidance available from this club.

You can attain a VIN by requesting one from DVLA.

Download and study the IVA manual which is available on the direct.gov site.

Read as much as you can on here about IVA and monocoque cars and if in doubt, ask!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I would suggest you will struggle.

As others have said, I'm sure it could be got through IVA if you are experienced, have all the kit, the time and deep pockets. No offense but that doesn't sound like you... ^_^

...and probably not the other guy, which is why he sold it...

Keep it as a track day car, maybe?

Yes, you'll probably struggle but that doesn't mean it's impossible and few worthwhile things are easy.

People with little or no experience get cars through IVA, it's just a case of asking the right questions when you need to and taking it from there.

Cost wise the IVA test is £450 ish and £90 for a re-test fee (highly likely), the remainder of the cost depends on how complete the kit is, and how creative you are sourcing parts.

I take it this is a car that's never been on the road i.e. not a very early pre-SVA kit that was registered incorrectly?

For comparison, I bought a Zero kit from GBS, never done anything car related ever. Still took me a lot of questions and research and help to get through and pass IVA on the 2nd test.

Theduck on the other hand bought an unfinished monocoque car, did the required work, still took 2 IVAs but still did it and less than half, if not a 3rd of the cost of what mine did.

Agreed, its not as easy as building a Zero...but then, that's not as easy as building a Caterham. Comes down to a trade off between cost and effort. What is your time worth?
In the grand scheme of things, its not excessively expensive nor impossible. The expensive part is the addiction that follows

Wow,

Guys I can't thank you enough for the input and helpful answers, if it were a case of just bolting some metal in here and there then I'd be happy to tackle such jobs, but anymore than that, cost and practicality (no garage) I'm stuffed!

I was told the car was iva test ready minus the wiper mechanism which came with car but wasn't fitted, also I've fitted a wash bottle, If I had more experience on what to look for it would have helped, but I don't, it's a real shame as the car looks pretty cool and me and the wife were looking forward to a few weekends away in it, im sorry if this is cheeky but is there near by owners/builders that would come empty my cupboards of tea bags and cast their eye over it for an opinion of what to do next :)

Normally you contact the DVLA & ask for a VIN no. but that can take a long while.

They are usually supplied by the manufacturer, & have to be unique.

I have heard that SOME people make up their own 17 character Vin no.

with a mix of letters and numbers......... :)
